{"id":246,"date":"2013-09-12T14:16:51","date_gmt":"2013-09-12T18:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wrpg211\/?p=246"},"modified":"2014-10-14T12:27:40","modified_gmt":"2014-10-14T16:27:40","slug":"i-cant-swim-jumping-into-the-pool-of-blogging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wrpg211\/2013\/09\/12\/i-cant-swim-jumping-into-the-pool-of-blogging\/","title":{"rendered":"I Can&#8217;t Swim!!! &#8212; Jumping Into the Pool of Blogging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the beginning of this class, I knew that I wanted to use my blog to talk about all aspects of archives: technology, education, current trends, issues, news, and humor.\u00a0 My main audience will be those involved with archives and special collections, including both students and professionals.\u00a0 Posting on a weekly schedule, I will work to make my blog well-researched and interesting for my audience.\u00a0 I also hope my make my blog easily navigable and visually appealing, which can be seen in my design sketch below.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_247\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-247\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-247 \" style=\"font-size: 12px;line-height: 18px\" alt=\"Blog Layout\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wrpg211\/files\/2013\/09\/Blog-Layout-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wrpg211\/files\/2013\/09\/Blog-Layout-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/wrpg211\/files\/2013\/09\/Blog-Layout.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My initial blog sketch<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the challenges I will face will be ensuring that the information I present is both understandable and not \u201cdumbed-down.\u201d\u00a0 My audience will consist of those who know nothing about archives as well as those who have spent their lives in the field.\u00a0 Finding the right blend between these two types of readers will be a difficult balance to strike initially, but will improve over time as my audience solidifies and my understanding of their needs expands.<\/p>\n<p>Another will come from the fact that the archival science community is a small one, and that many competing blogs exist for the attention of this tiny group.\u00a0 There are many great blogs out there, two of which I look at below.\u00a0 By blending the positive aspects of many of the archives blogs I follow, I hope to create an attractive online presence that will help my website flourish.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Fondly, Pennsylvania<\/i>. Web. 12 September 2013. &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/hsp.org\/blogs\/fondly-pennsylvania\">http:\/\/hsp.org\/blogs\/fondly-pennsylvania<\/a>&gt;.<\/p>\n<p><i>Fondly, Pennsylvania<\/i> is one of the many blogs run by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.\u00a0 Focusing on the society\u2019s most recent projects and discoveries, the blog is a great resource for those interested in the day-to-day happenings of HSP.\u00a0 One of the more attractive visual elements of the blog is the use of preview screens for each blog post.\u00a0 The volume of posts that go through the blog necessitate this step, which makes navigation and browsing on the front page much easier for the reader.\u00a0 The top of the blog displays a short description of the content of the site, which also helps readers, especially those unfamiliar with HSP.\u00a0 Captivating images also help draw the audience\u2019s attention to the posts.\u00a0 HSP has created a great blog in <i>Fondly, Pennsylvania,<\/i> using interesting articles and a unique perspective to attract and inform readers.\u00a0 As such, this blog serves as a great guidepost as I put more thought into what I ultimately want my blog to be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Melissa Mannon. <i>ArchivesInfo<\/i>. ArchivesInfo. 2013.
