On <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW131131897 BCX8\">Wednesday morning, September 21st<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW131131897 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW131131897 BCX8\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW131131897 BCX8\">\u00a0more than 150 people were aboard a small boat fleeing crisis-ridden Lebanon in hopes of a better life in Italy. The passengers were mostly Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian, some of whom were both children and elderly.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW131131897 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Four hours after leaving Lebanon&#8217;s shores, the engine quit, and the boat capsized off the Syrian port of Tartous. \u00a0Almost immediately approximately 100 people died; bodies were floating everywhere, while survivors clung to the overturned boat. Despite Lebanese authorities refusing to help and threatening to kill anyone who returned, 20 people were rescued, either swimming to the Syrian shore or picked up by Syrian and Russian boats. Currently, the survivors are either still recovering in Syrian\u00a0hospitals or have been returned to Lebanon.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-53\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.dickinson.edu\/yandowhm\/files\/2022\/10\/boatt-300x191.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-53\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goshennews.com\/news\/national_news\/dont-leave-me-survivor-recounts-lebanon-boat-sinking\/article_a96b4f2f-5c29-5029-a5f6-f76a55fba112.html\">The Goshen News<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW127350046 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127350046 BCX8\">This <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127350046 BCX8\">deadly<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127350046 BCX8\"> smuggling operation forces necessary attention to the underlying problems forcing both Lebanese citizens and other asylum seekers to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127350046 BCX8\">attempt<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127350046 BCX8\"> such a dangerous journey across the Mediterranean. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127350046 BCX8\">The most prevalent issue in Lebanon is the endemic and crippling poverty exasperated by the 2019 <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127350046 BCX8\">financial crisis<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW127350046 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW127350046 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\">As <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\">we have<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\"> discussed in earlier blog posts, Lebanon is also the temporary home of a massive group of refugees from Syria and Palestine who the majority, live in cramped and thrown together camps across the country. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\">Unfortunately, these refugees, specifically Palestinian refugees, are denied basic <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\">rights;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\"> without citizenship and no access to healthcare or education.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\"> Even if one tried to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\"> make<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\">a living in Lebanon,\u202fmost are marginalized and disenfranchised, barred from owning property and from entering <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\">fruitful professions<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW45470931 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP TrackedChange SCXW45470931 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sad to say, this situation is not unusual; <a href=\"https:\/\/lebanon.un.org\/en\/179170-unhcr-iom-shipwreck-tragedy-lebanese-coast-underscores-need-continuing-support-lebanon\">the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported<\/a> that &#8220;approximately 3,500 individuals attempted to make the journey this year alone.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted to use this blog post to discuss the migrant boat tragedy in Lebanon.
