My Very First Cumberland Stream Team Workshop!

Cumberland Stream Team Workshop, September 24, Kaufman 109, Carlisle, PA

On September 24th, members of ALLARM and 16 Stream Team volunteers came together to prepare for their volunteer monitoring experience in Cumberland County. Before volunteers got to dive into learning how to use the water testing kits they learned about ALLARM and the Stream Team protocal. Helen Schlimm and Rachel Krewson talked about ALLARM’s mission and history, volunteer expectations, and parameters for water monitoring which include water temperature, pH, conductivity, and nitrate-nitrogen. Rachel did a great demonstration of the proper way to enter the stream for water collection and water collecting protocals.

This was my first time teaching in a Stream Team Workshop and I cannot wait for the next one! This is my first semester working for ALLARM so it was crazy to be doing this event after a crash course in water testing after my first two weeks but it definetly paid off. My group worked really well together and it was nice to get to know them during the workshop. They were all very eager to be monitoring their chosen sites because they had close connections to their streams and a passion to contribute to a database on water quality. They all were passionate about restoring the health of the Susquehanna and Cheasapeake Bay and hoped their water data would support this. I am excited for my team and the other 13 volunteer to get out there and start monitoring. Hopefully I will get to catch up with them sometime in a future workshop!
