Methods and Process

The Comparative Black Liberation group videotaped oral history interviews in and around both King William’s Town, South Africa, and Clarkesdale, Coahoma County, Mississippi.  They interviewed people who experienced the anti-apartheid struggle and Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa, and the Civil Rights Movement in Coahoma County.  These interviews provide an often unarticulated perspective into these important transitional times.

In South Africa, the Comparative Black Liberation group conducted research in the archives of the University of Fort Hare, South Africa’s oldest historically black university and home to an expansive Black Consciousness collection. In their research, program participants sought out information that would inform their particular section of the project: liberation philosophy, lived experiences, memorials, and music.

The students created this website in order to make the research available to the global academic community and the communities in which they conducted research.
