History 288, “Civil War & Reconstruction,” with Professor Matthew Pinsker, meets at Dickinson College during spring semester 2016 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 130pm in Denny 211. Course texts include Louis Masur’s The Civil War: A Concise History (2011) and Eric Foner’s A Short History of Reconstruction (2015 ed.) as well as numerous articles by noted historians such as Drew Faust, Judith Giesberg, James McPherson and Brooks Simpson. Students in the course will produce a custom made battle map using the new Google Maps and a “close reading” of an Abraham Lincoln document for the website, Lincoln’s Writings: The Multi-Media Edition. They will also research and write a substantial biographical profile of a key historical figure from the Reconstruction era. They will also participate in a special conference on Reconstruction hosted by the House Divided Project and a walking tour of Civil War Carlisle.
