Hello!
My name is Noah Salsich, I’m 19, and am a sophomore at Dickinson College, pursuing a double major of Environmental Studies and Political Science. I am interested in green policy and the politics of sustainability, and am curious about green infrastructure. I would love to work at an environmental policy NGO, as I enjoy working as a part of a team on these issues. I love the outdoors, and was lucky enough to work at a conservation group up in Maine over the summer. This summer, I hope to land an internship at some of the research positions and policy organizations I am interested in!
A great view from my job!
I would consider a few places home. I come from rural northern Connecticut, where I’ve lived for most of my life at my parents houses. This I would consider my first home, its where my closest family lives and is where I return to from college on break. I share my home with my parents and my younger sister, and my dad has two dogs. Coming from rural Connecticut, I am surrounded by a lot of woods, farms, and the next truly urban area is an hour or so drive. In my small town, there aren’t large sustainability initiatives in place because we don’t have a considerably large footprint and that scale is not needed. However, I do wish my area had a stronger sustainability culture with public transportation and green energy programs!
I also call my college home. I have always been fairly independent, and coming to Dickinson has been exactly what I’ve wanted in a lot of ways. I enjoy having my room to come back home to after classes and planning my schedule with going to the gym, etc. Here there is certainly a culture of sustainability, beyond being a carbon-neutral institution it is definitely on the minds of students throughout the day, which is so great to be apart of. Being an environmental studies major, I really enjoy the depth of these classes and the amount of faculty we have working on sustainable projects. I look forward to hearing more about what life is like at AUS, and your interests, lives and where you call home!

Thank you Noah for telling us about yourself, it felt very thorough yet concise, almost as if I was meeting you in person! Your passion towards the environment and sustainability is quite admirable, also unsurprising considering you grew up surrounded by greenery and woods. Honestly a personal dream of mine is to visit places with more greenery like that as they have been quite scarce in the areas I have lived.
I’ve done some research on Connecticut and came to realize that apparently climate change is a bit problematic over there, evidently there are concerns over clean air and water quality. Therefore, I believe your interest and work will be quite fitting to your hometown someday. I’m curious, did you already know this? Perhaps it was actually the reason you took up this interest in the first place?

I looked up some photos of Connecticut and absolutely loved the vibes; meadows, streams, open fields, hot summers and snowy winters sound quite lovely! I wonder how different your first home is from Pennsylvania—and which you would prefer!
I love your aspirations! The combination of Environmental Studies and Political Science is very common here at AUS, as the intersections between the two fields are certainly relevant to explore. In fact, the UAE is hosting COP28 this year, and AUS has been selected to host the HECD conference! Being an International Studies major myself, I definitely understand the importance of discussing green politics and being part of the change. Thus, I would like to know how you plan to approach this subject. What did you learn from the conservation group you worked with? And how do you wish to enhance the sustainability culture in your area?

Thank you for taking the time to share some information about yourself; I certainly have felt that I got to know you better. It is fascinating how much you care about the environment by participating in programs that work to benefit it. I have always wanted to work on becoming more sustainable, as striving to benefit our environment is important. From the images I have searched for on the internet about the rural part of Connecticut, I fell in love with how beautiful it is, and you must feel lucky that you grew up surrounded by forests, meadows, and streams. I have always been fond of nature and found it peaceful; I often listen to nature sounds on YouTube to calm myself down.
I looked up how Connecticut is working towards combating climate change, and I found that many initiatives recognize this problem and are attempting to eliminate it, which is great!. As I have mentioned above, I am striving towards becoming more sustainable; what advice or suggestion would you give me in order to achieve that goal?
