Urban Agriculture
In the expert hands of economics professor Sinan Koont, students learned about many different aspects of urban agriculture in Cuba throughout the course and during the trip. One day was devoted to a visit to UPBC Organopónico Vivero Alamar, an 25-acre organic farm in Alamar, a district of the province of Havana. The entire group was given a tour, and some of the group chose to stay for lunch and an afternoon of work on the farm while others attended other lectures. Another day, students were taken to multiple urban agriculture sites throughout the city, including an urban roof project and the first civilian organopónico in Cuba. See the Nine Days in Havana Blog for student accounts of these events, or read more about urban agriculture in Cuba on the Student Excerpts page.
