I am very surprised by the Pew poll’s results. I am curious where the surveyors got their sample. In my experience most people say the Civil War started on the basis of State’s rights but that the Emancipation Proclamation transformed it into a war about both State’s rights and slavery.
The Pew Poll does not surprise me. Most Americans get the Civil War knowledge through school textbooks. These textbooks are generally the ones approved by the Texas school board and likely push the focus of the war from slavery to state’s rights.
