Course Abstract

History 311, “American Slavery,” with Professor Matthew Pinsker, meets at Dickinson College during spring 2019 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1030am at the House Divided Studio on 61 N. West Street.  Course texts include Eric Foner’s Gateway to Freedom (2015), Peter Kolchin’s American Slavery (2003 ed.), and James Oakes’s The Radical and The Republican (2007), as well as various readings by authors such as Ta-Nehisi Coates, Manisha Sinha and Isabel Wilkerson.  Students in this seminar will study the historiography of slavery and antislavery as they work toward building a series of online exhibits that can help contribute to the new Dickinson & Slavery initiative.
