Description
During this informal window, staff from the offices of Access and Disability Services and SOAR (Strategies, Organization, and Achievement Resources) will be available to answer questions and offer insights on how to maximize inclusion and success for students contending with a variety of barriers.
Typically between 15-18% of Dickinson students are eligible for disability-based academic accommodations — and national statistics show that professors can expect to have more students with disabilities than just those known to them. In the class of 2024, 26% of the grads had received accommodations for a disability. These students contend with academic barriers that most of their peers do not.
Faculty will have the chance to ask general or specific questions about students or classroom practices, and to potentially learn more about universal design strategies such as:
- Creating a system of shared class notes (eliminating the need to set up a note-takers whose notes are exclusively for those with an accommodation for supplemental notes);
- Maximizing participation, especially from students with anxiety about speaking up in class;
- How to ensure your Moodle pages, syllabus, and all uploaded documents and videos are accessible to all students;
- …and more!
If you know in advance what topic you’d like to learn more about or have a specific question you’d like to discuss, we would welcome your letting us know by emailing access@dickinson.edu or SOAR@dickinson.edu.
