On Saturday, March 29th, twenty Dickinson students and faculty members piled into two vans for a Russian Department field trip to Brighton Beach. Brighton Beach is located in Brooklyn, New York City, and is home to the largest Russian-speaking population in the United States. Despite the rain, students perused Russian bookstores, bakeries, and shops; they also practiced their language skills during a scavenger hunt, where they had to locate a list of items in various stores using only Russian. The group then enjoyed a five-course traditional Russian meal, including salads, borsht, bread, dumplings, shashlyk (shish kabob), and tea.
