On October 7, 2016, Prof. Amanda Gregg (Middlebury College) gave a guest lecture entitled, “Developing Industry in a ‘Backward’ Economy: The Imperial Russian Case.” Prof. Gregg completed her Ph.D. in Economics at Yale University in 2015. During her talk, which was attended by over 40 students from the Departments of Russian, Economics, and International Studies, she explained the major problems facing the Russian economy before 1917 and the consequences of Russian institutions for enterprises. She also presented some of her extensive work on Russian factory micro data that she has been collecting during research trips to Russia over the past several years. While at Dickinson, Prof. Gregg also had meals with students and visited an Economics senior seminar.
