4/5 Bike Ride

Have you wanted to learn how to ride a bike, but have never had the time or a teacher? Here is your opportunity!

Saturday, April 5, Tyce Herrman (Dickinson College Center for Sustainability Education) is partnering with DCOC to provide bike training for people who want to learn to bike especially in preparation for the bike to farm potluck.  Tyce has years of cycling and cycling education experience, including a cross-country cycling trip in 2012.

Please meet outside DPS at 2pm for the trip.

A bike is not necessary for this trip, but if you have your own, you should bring it. You can borrow a Red Bike from DPS if you do not have your own (Tyce will help you take care of this on Saturday).  The training will last a maximum of 1 hour, but participants are encouraged to stay longer as their time and abilities allow.  Max capacity of 10 individuals.

Please email herrmant@dickinson.edu or outingclub@dickinson.edu with questions.

When you sign up, please include your name, phone number and if you will need a bike.

Leave No Trace Trainer Course 4/11-4/12

Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics teaches people of all ages how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, and is the most widely accepted outdoor ethics program used on public lands. Through relevant and targeted education, research and outreach, the Center ensures the long-term health of our natural world. In its simplest form, Leave No Trace is about making good decisions to protect the world around you – the world we all enjoy.

This two-day course assists student participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace, and techniques for disseminating these low impact skills.  Successful graduates of the Trainer Course gain skills to teach Leave No Trace techniques and ethics to other students, friends and family. Participants learn the concept of Leave No Trace and prepare to teach Leave No Trace curriculum in a variety of settings – such as schools, camps, parks, wilderness and front country areas. 3/1 Caving

DCOC is partnering with the York County Grotto to go caving on Saturday, March 1st!

Will, Anna and Wes will be leading this trip, we have 9 spots left to fill. The details of this trip will be worked out in the coming days because of the other trip going out on Sunday Feb 23. Stay tuned for those details.

Generally speaking: The cave will be very wet and muddy, but it should be a great time. Two vans will leave from DPS/Kaufman at 9:30am to meet Andy near the cave. He will guide us through the cave and it should be a blast!

To go on this trip, you will need a headlamp (and a spare set of batteries), clothes that you can get muddy, and a change of clothes. The cave will be 56F, so it shouldn’t be too bad, but you will need to wear a fleece or something because of the mud. You will need to have on two layers of clothes, one to get muddy and the other so that you are not naked when you change out of your muddy clothes after the cave.

The Grotto and DCOC will provide helmets for you, but you need a headlamp. Please try and borrow one from a friend. The club has 3 headlamps that we can use, but it would be best for people to find their own. (No flashlights allowed, you need your hands to cave!)

After getting out of the cave, we all will grab a bite to eat, so bring some money for lunch.

When you sign up you must include your phone number!

Please meet at the DPS parking lot at 9:15 so that you can leave by 9:30!

Email the account at outingclub@dickinson.edu if you have questions.

2/23 Caving

DCOC is partnering with the York County Grotto to go caving this Sunday!

Sara Sweeten and Jack Marcus will be leading this trip to Carnegie’s Cave near Shippensburg, 10 people (Sara and Jack not included) can go on this trip.

The cave is very wet and muddy, but it should be a great time. Two vans will leave from DPS/Kaufman at 9:30am sharp to go to the Sunoco gas station in Shippensburg where you will meet Andy, a really nice guy from the caving club. He will guide you through the cave and it should be a blast!

To go on this trip, you will need a headlamp (and a spare set of batteries), clothes that you can get muddy, and a change of clothes. The cave will be 56F, so it shouldn’t be too bad, but you will need to wear a fleece or something because of the mud. You are parking (thus will also be changing) in a city parking lot, so you will need to have on two layers of clothes, one to get muddy and the other so that you are not naked when you change out of your muddy clothes after the cave.

The Grotto and DCOC will provide helmets for you, but you need a headlamp. Please try and borrow one from a friend. The club has 3 headlamps that we can use, but it would be best for people to find their own. (No flashlights allowed, you need your hands to cave!)

After getting out of the cave, you all will grab a bite to eat, so bring some money for lunch in Shippensburg.

When you sign up you must include your phone number!

Please meet at the DPS parking lot at 9:15 so that you can leave by 9:30!

Email the account at outingclub@dickinson.edu if you have questions.

2/16 XC ski trip

On Sunday DCOC will go out towards western PA to Cross Country Ski.

We have at least 3 spots open for this trip and we may be able to take more depending on interest and vans. Will and Karl will be leading this crew.

We will leave Kaufman parking lot at 9am promptly and return around dinner time.

Here is the link to the Pennsylvania Cross Country Skiers Association map

This is the link to ski rental place we used last time and will probably use again

The cost for the trip should be minimal; we got senate funding to pay for gear rental and vans.

Please bring a lunch for this trip.

If you would like to come, please sign up with your phone number and XC skiing experience (no experience required to go on the trip, we would just like to gauge the level of expertise).
