Сегодня ранил себя унтер-офицер Ткачев, отстрелив себе безымянный и мизинный пальцы. Говорит, что случайно, взяв винтовку за штык. Гусар Вечканов отстрелил себе большой палец. Тоже “случайно”. Новички – сызранцы. Эскадрон этим возмущен.

Today at 7 p.m. our artillery fire hit a German airplane. It landed on the German coast where it was taken.

Non-commissioned officer Tkachev wounded himself today by shooting off his ring and little fingers. He says he accidentally grabbed his rifle by the bayonet. Hussar Vechkanov shot off his thumb, also “accidentally.” The newcomers are Syzrans. The squadron is outraged by this.

Ездил в штаб дивизии на собрание дивизионного комитета. Меня выбрали в особую боевую комиссию. Куда только меня не выбирают? Представителем от офицеров в полковой комитет, председателем эскадронного дисциплинарного суда, в дивизионный комитет, а теперь еще нужно сдавать эскадрон. Но я просил начальника дивизии остаться в строю, а не быть при штабе.

Сегодня молодой гусар Судаков оторвал себе 7 пальцев капсюлем ручной гранаты. Думал потерять 1-2 пальца и в тыл, а тут 7 пальцев.

I went to the divisional headquarters for a meeting of the divisional committee. I was elected to a special combat committee. What haven’t I been chosen for? As a representative of the officers to the regimental committee, as chairman of the squadron disciplinary court, to the division committee, and now I still have to give up my squadron. But I asked the division commander to remain in the ranks, and not to be at headquarters.

Today the young Hussar Sudakov blew off 7 fingers with a hand grenade. I thought he would lose 1-2 fingers and go to the rear, but he lost seven.

Early in the morning the old Hussar of the 3rd Platoon, Gumirov, was wounded in the groin on an outing. The 1st Platoon’s section was hit by a bombardment.

Сегодня наш гусарский дивизион сменили уланы. У них только один офицер – командир эскадрона. У них 120 штыков при одном пулемете Максима, и ружье-пулемет Льюиса.

Today our Hussar division has been replaced by the Lancers. They have only one officer, the squadron commander. They have 120 bayonets with one Maxim machine gun and a Lewis submachine gun.

В Кронштадте анархия. Вчера я с эскадроном сделал прогулку-маневр. Прошли мы более 20 верст в штаб Гусарского полка и обратно приехали по узкоколейке. Гусары удивлялись такому “дальнему набегу”. А сегодня в первый раз эскадрон запротестовал выходить на учение. С 2 ручными гранатами и парабеллумом в руке я вышел к людям, но, Слава Богу, удалось уговорить их заниматься.

There is anarchy in Kronstadt. Yesterday I conducted a walk-maneuver with the squadron. We walked more than 20 versts to the Hussar regiment headquarters, and we returned by narrow gauge railway. The Hussars were surprised by such a “long incursion”. And today, for the first time, the squadron protested going out for a drill. I went out to the men with two hand grenades and a Parabellum in my hand but thank God I managed to persuade them to practice.

Новый Верховный Главнокомандующий генерал Алексеев убран и заменен генералом Брусиловым. На место Брусилова назначен генерал Гутор. Я устал, похудел. Трудно заставлять людей заниматься, когда другие эскадроны ничего не делают.

The new supreme Commander-in-Chief, General Alexeyev, was removed from his position and replaced by General Brusilov. General Gutor was appointed to replace Brusilov. I am tired and have lost weight. It’s hard to get people engaged when the other squadrons are doing nothing.

Веду занятия. С 9 мая я временно командую гусарским дивизионом.

I am in charge of drills. Since May 9th I have been temporarily in command of the Hussar division.
