Наш Главнокомандующий генерал Куропаткин ушел, и вместо него назначен генерал Рузский. Раньше такая перемена произвела бы впечатление на Армию, а теперь массы к этому совершенно равнодушны.
Вчера и сегодня слышна сильная канонада у Риги. Говорят, что это подготовка к нашему наступлению. Еще говорят, что у немцев 94 тысячи, а у нас – 47 тысяч и 2000 орудий. Румыния получает из Германии медикаменты, а мы готовим ей артиллерию.
Идут занятия, придирки начальства – все это хорошо для мирного времени, а сейчас это становится противным. Мое любимое занятие – готовиться в поход: чищу пистолеты, укладываю седельные вьюки и мечтаю о конных атаках. А что касается мира, то, по моему, он будет не раньше зимы 1917 г.

Yesterday and today a loud cannonade could be heard from Riga. They say that it is a preparation for our advance. They also say that the Germans have 94 thousand men, and we have 47 thousand men and 2,000 cannons. Romania is receiving medicine from Germany, but we are preparing artillery for them.
We are doing exercises, the leadership is squabbling—all this is fine for peacetime, but now it is becoming repugnant. We are being told urgently that we will advance, that there will be a landing in the rear of the German army. Yesterday I jumped on my horse and flew along with her, over her head, and severely injured my left arm.

Today there was a review in honor of our Sovereign Comrade-in-Arms and Heir Tsarevich’s birth, and in the evening I visited the 2nd Squadron, which I love so much.
Вернулся из отпуска. Сегодня полковое учение. Полковник Скуратов разносил меня за то, что я, якобы, подвожу Барнова и не давал мне оправдаться. Но ведь эскадроном командует Барнов, и когда я ему подсказываю, он говорит: «Потрудитесь молчать», ну и пришлось делать глупости. Это очень обидно.
I returned from my leave. Today there is regiment training. Colonel Skuratov reprimanded me because I am apparently disappointing Barnov and he did not give me a chance to defend myself. But, after all, Barnov is in charge of the squadron, and when I make suggestions to him, he says: “Be so kind as to keep silent,” and so I have had to do foolish things. This is very insulting.
Вчера совершенно неожиданно получил отпуск на 5 дней. Сегодня в 4 часа утра был уже в Пскове.
Yesterday I was granted 5 days of leave completely unexpectedly. I was already in Pskov by 4 o’clock this morning.
Сегодня мой день – день Святого Владимира, но все обошлось без празднования. Каждый день идут занятия. В отпуск никого не пускают. Приказано закупить лошадей тем, у кого их нет.
Today is my feast day—St. Vladimir’s Day—but in the end there was no celebration. We are busy every day. No one is being granted leave. We have been ordered to buy horses for those who have none.
Сегодня в день годовщины боя на реке Дубиссе была отслужена панихида по прапорщику Бланкенганген. Потом был ужин для немногих. Был полковник Скуратов, ротмистр Топорков, штаб-ротмистр Иваненко и поручик Вебер. После ужина играли в карты.
Как быстро идет время, скоро будет уже 3-ий год, как идет война.
Today on the anniversary of the battle on the Dubysa River a memorial service was conducted for Warrant Officer Blankengangen. Then there was a dinner for a few of us. Colonel Skuratov, Captain Toporkov, First Lieutenant Ivanenko, and Lieutenant Veber were there. After dinner we played cards.
How quickly time passes; soon it will be the third year the war has been going on.

Итак, мы в 12-ой Армии генерала Радько-Дмитриева. Сегодня маршрут небольшой, но через болото. Вечером ходили за грибами. Штаб полка занял замок Шлос-Лембург. Говорят, что здесь мы будем долго стоять, поэтому надо хорошо устроиться с квартирами.
На юге опять победа, у нас под Ригой взято 2000 пленных. Мы стоим от Риги в 60 верстах.

Just like that, we are in General Radko Dmitriev’s 12th Army. Our route today was not long, but it went through swamplands. In the evening we went mushroom picking. The regiment headquarters took Limburg Castle. They say that we will stay here for a long time, and so we must settle lodging arrangements well.
We were victorious again in the south; we took 2,000 prisoners outside of Riga. We are 60 versts from Riga.
Сегодня переход в 50 верст. Местность все время очень красивая, холмы и леса. Ротмистр Барнов скомандовал «смирно» 2 стрелковым офицерам, обознался и страшно зол.
Today’s march was 50 versts. The terrain is always very beautiful—hills and forests. Captain Barnov yelled “Attention!” at 2 infantry officers; he mistook them for someone else and became dreadfully angry.

Выступили в 8 часов 45 мин. утра и в 8 часов вечера были здесь. Шли лесом. Сегодня я даже выкупался. Нам осталось еще 2 дня пути.

We marched out at 8:45 in the morning and arrived here at 8 o’clock in the evening. We walked through the forest. Today I even bathed. We have 2 days of this journey left to go.
