The Annengof Farmstead.

I left Petrograd yesterday at 11 pm. I arrived at the Rushona Station at 2 pm today, and from there we went by horses to the regiment. The squadron was highly dispersed. The officer’s apartment was nice. It turns out that in accordance with the Imperial Order, I have earned the rank of first lieutenant, as I have now spent over a year in the war. It feels good.

Cavalry Captain Barnov has left and I remained in charge of the squadron. During our equestrian training in the snow, I fell into a ditch and was nearly seriously injured. My “Lancer” bucked up and began to drag me, but luckily my boot ripped and I was able to free my leg from the stirrup. I spent that evening at regimental headquarters; we occupied ourselves with a foolish thing–communicating with spirits.

The weather has been excellent since morning. I conducted shooting drills with my squadron and demonstrated an example of an attack with hand grenades. It turns out that Mankevich, a hussar who has returned from leave, and who is now a non-commissioned officer, had been a prisoner but escaped. He returned to the squadron during my stay in Petrograd. He escaped from captivity in October 1914 from Kalisz, while he was at work. Together with one of the infantrymen, he walked for nearly 5 months before, completely by chance, happening upon his friend’s regiment; however this friend had no such luck, as he was killed by his own regiment’s wire.

A new Cornet in our squadron, Yanishevsky, was also held prisoner and escaped. He holds all four degrees of the soldier’s St. George’s cross.

We got up at 6 am and went to the assembly point, and from there we proceeded to a position at the Livenhof Station. We arrived there at 8 pm. Half of the officers could be left in this position, and so I decided to take the horse handlers to their location myself. It was already midnight by the time I arrived.

I brought machine guns and an old lance from 1837, like the ones from 1812. The Hussars decided that it was indeed a lance and that it could impale 5 people.

The Village of Rushony.

Today I assumed temporary command of Her Majesty’s squadron. It was announced yesterday in The Invalid that I’ve been promoted to first lieutenant with seniority as of September 26th, 1915. In 16 months, that is in January 1917, I will be a captain, unless we beat the Germans by then.

Our forces are advancing. General Skoropadsky conducted an inspection review of our regiment today at 1 pm and watched dressage tests with our horses. As it turned out, Her Majesty’s squadron performed better than all the others and Captain Toporkov and I received a merit citation. The General was surprised that I have such good knowledge, as if I have always been with the squadron. But I found out everything from the sergeant-major: about tools for digging trenches, horseshoeing, etc. The general kept joking, saying: “Wow, Petrushevksy will go far.” I am terribly pleased that I didn’t let Toporkov down.

Today at 11 o’clock it was announced suddenly and hastily, as is always the case in war, that we were moving to a new position in order to relieve the Second Cavalry Division in the area between Tsar’grad and the Lavreskoy Station. All the squadrons are on the front line and behind us, in reserve, there is only the swamp. My squadron’s area comprises 2.5 versts, but there are only 64 people to defend it.
