We are in the trenches; we relieved the Kargopol Dragoons. Here the bank of the Dvina is very steep.

The newspapers report that Germany has motioned for peace. No, we need to fight to the end.

This evening there was a false gas alarm. An amusing kitten showed up in my squadron. An attack is hardly possible for us here, since the bank of the Dvina is too steep.

It is freezing and bright. “Grease ice” is going by on the Dvina. According to the newspapers, the French took 13 thousand prisoners in Verdun. They are writing a lot about peace. The Germans stubbornly want to start negotiations. It is clear that their cause is lost, although they are continuing to advance in Romania.

Today is Christmas Eve for the Germans. The weather has been thawing out since morning; rain and wet snow are falling. Our battery led an exchange of fire with the German trenches. The Germans were silent at first, then responded with very sparse fire. It is no longer like before, when at one shell from us they would bombard us with dozens.

What incomprehensible negligence. We only today learned of the Sovereign Emperor’s order about his unwillingness to secure peace until the last enemy soldier leaves Russian soil. It is the same with General Ruzsky’s order. Only in Russia could such negligence occur. This was probably done with the aim of demoralizing the troops with ideas of the Sovereign’s “betrayal.” The Sovereign is perfectly right not to want peace. We wilk win; if only there were order at the rear front and no revolution until the end of the war. Today we are being relieved, and we are going from the trenches to the reserves.

Yesterday evening a frost set in and the walk was hellishly cold. I have been granted leave to go and help my brother.

I brought my brother home today, and how contented he is. He will be living with our aunt temporarily and then he will go to Crimea. He is having severe heart troubles. In captivity, despite being starving, he came in first in all the competitions and won against all his allies: Englishmen, Italians, and Frenchmen. I made purchases with him; he has nothing, for he gave everything to his friends in Germany.

I was with my relatives and Colonel Velichkov. My brother is behaving properly and hardly remembers his “obsessions.” In his 2 years of captivity he consumed a lot of philosophical and socialist books, which is why he went crazy.

Grigory Rasputin has been killed—the plague of our time. It is possible that someone else will take his place, but for now the fact is clear, and all the gossip is about this. The licentious baboon who held the fate of Russia in his hands has been killed. It happened on the 17th of December. A general I do not know congratulated me with this fact in Gatchina. He was killed by Count Sumarokov-Elston, Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, and Deputy Purishkevich.

As of October 1st the officers’ salary has been increased. An unmarried commanding officer receives an increase of 15 rubles, and a married one receives 45 rubles a month. This is meager. The cost of living is dreadfully high. And my brother tells me that in Germany all goods are sold for peacetime prices, and that it is possible to procure anything. Such is the way of things.
