This morning we arrived in Syzran. Here there is not much snow, but it is hellishly cold. 36 of my men were separated from the troop train. I fear that much time will be wasted because of this.

Syzran.

According to the newspapers, Emperor Franz Joseph has passed away and the Germans want to form a new Polish state.

They say that there was a riot over rations in Samara. Disturbances are anticipated here as well. I cannot leave, since we are short many things; the regiment gave me incorrect records.

Yesterday I left for Samara to meet the Ussurians’ troop train with my father in the lead, but he was delayed somewhere. I fell asleep at a table at the train station, and my famous Browning gun was stolen from my holster.

Things are no good in Romania; the Germans are outside of Bucharest. Our men are advancing through the Carpathian Mountains.

I left for Moscow. I received a letter about my brother Georgy’s return from German captivity. I am being urged to remain with the Reserve Regiment and command the squadron, but I want to do more fighting.

I arrived in Petrograd and went straight to see my brother at the Nikolaev war hospital. He is in good condition, but he has an obsession: biology, and an essay about life and death. We need to get him out of the psychiatric ward or else he will go completely crazy. He is convinced that if he were to meet with Wilhelm, then Wilhelm would immediately secure peace with Russia. This evening I am going to Pskov.
