We are being told urgently that we will advance, that there will be a landing in the rear of the German army. Yesterday I jumped on my horse and flew along with her, over her head, and severely injured my left arm.

Our head general Kuropatkin left, and General Ruzsky was appointed in his place. In the past such a change would have made an impression on the Army, but now everyone is completely indifferent to this.

Yesterday and today a loud cannonade could be heard from Riga. They say that it is a preparation for our advance. They also say that the Germans have 94 thousand men, and we have 47 thousand men and 2,000 cannons. Romania is receiving medicine from Germany, but we are preparing artillery for them.

We are doing exercises, the leadership is squabbling—all this is fine for peacetime, but now it is becoming repugnant. My favorite exercise is preparing to march out: I am cleaning my pistols, packing my saddlebags, and dreaming of horseback battles. And as for peace, I believe it will come no sooner than winter of 1917.

No one is holding out hope for campaign or battle. It turns out that the recent shooting was an offensive demonstration from the Germans’ side.

I received a letter from my wife. She writes that a telegram came to her from the war agent Colonel Pototsky in Copenhagen, in which he wrote about my brother Cornet Georgy’s illness; he has been put in a clinic for the mentally ill. I have decided to petition for his release from German captivity. Maybe he is faking it, and then—God willing—he can return to the regiment soon. He was so strong and robust.

Yesterday I left for Petrograd. It is a pity that I was unable to find former regiment commander Count Shuvalov here; he is in Moscow now. I submitted a petition through the Count’s secretary addressed to the Empress.

Her Majesty the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna has indicated her agreement to come quickly to my brother’s aid. The Minister of Foreign Affairs will also petition.

Yesterday a German airplane dropped bombs on a threshing machine going past us. We practiced for tomorrow’s regiment competition. The newspapers report that General Kornilov, the leader of the 48th Infantry Division, escaped his imprisonment in Austria.

The regiment held a festival. The weather was marvelous. First there was a service and a review. The leader of our division, General Nilov, led the review. There were many guests. Then there was a breakfast, and the competitions began at 4 o’clock: hurdles for the Hussars, spear cutting and stabbing, then officer “fox hunting,” and finally trick riding. Everything was very good. 25 officers participated in the “fox hunting,” and 7 of them fell off their horses, since the ground was marshy and they were galloping very fast for the prizes. Cornet Gotovitsky got fairly badly injured in the woods, and Colonel Skuratov fell over a hurdle into the bog. In the evening after the competition there was a lunch that was served very well, since the cook was from Riga; there was much wine and liqueur, of the “Trenches,” “Comforter,” “Hussar” variety and so forth. There were 86 people total at the lunch. The cornets presented a goblet to the regiment and a charka [1] to the regiment commander. The non-commissioned officer Ponomarev from the 2nd Squadron won the prize for spear cutting, and the Hussar Isaev won the prize for trick riding.

[1] A charka is a traditional Russian vodka cup dating from the 16th century.
