The village of Gorki

This is where the dugouts of the Hussar and Lancer divisions are. I have 27 old hussars in the 11th Squadron and 20 of them are from the former 6th Squadron. So far, the whole division is under my command. My dugout is as full of water, like a well. I declared to the hussars that I would serve the old way, and, if necessary, I would reprimand them. Everybody agrees to that.

Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay broke off diplomatic relations with Germany. The French and British went on the offensive and took 200 guns and 30,000 prisoners. And we are still waiting.

I’m settling in. Now my dugout is excellent. It comprises of two rooms, lined with boards, but rather damp. The hussars made me a table and chairs. Today the new head of our division, General Velikopolsky, a former Lithuanian lancer, came to our village. A new slogan has appeared: “Peace without annexations or reparations”.

After the war I don’t think I will remain in the Army under the new regime or, as they say, “the clampdown.” I stand for the old order. Maybe I will go to university or polytechnic so as to be independent.

Our ruble is falling dramatically. I found out that Cornet Podolsky from our Hussar regiment shot himself. I saw him on the 29th of March. He was a nice boy. He was transferred to us from the Dagestan horse regiment into the 5th squadron to Shakhnazarov, who “looked into the future” him and placed him with the cavalry sergeant major. The vain young man ended his life. How could an officer such as Shakh be kept in the service?

Today I went to the headquarters of our “cavalry” Hussar regiment in New Bevershof. And in fact, the new division commander was conducting a review of the regiment. I had lunch at headquarters. I was warmly welcomed, and I was so happy at heart. I was especially touched by Colonel Skuratov. He said in parting, “I want to express my admiration for your attitude toward service in the Rifle Regiment. Remember that the regiment will not forget you and now another mounted squadron is behind you.” I replied that I was greatly supported by Vladimir Vasilievich Domozhirov, my former squadron commander, who had written me a marvelous letter when I was assigned to the Rifles.

Pskov.

There was an order for officers, soldiers, and sailors to remove the shoulder straps, as is customary in other national armies. It’s unclear what the Constituent Assembly will decide, and so “concerned citizens” have begun to tear off the shoulder straps off officers’ and soldiers’ uniforms. The disorder is intensifying.
