Our troops were retreating and, according to the newspapers, “were flattening out the front.” So that is why the cavalry ended up in trenches. It was very unpleasant to hear this news and my mood sank.

Yesterday the Germans occupied Petrokov. I was having problems with transportation. With great difficulty, I got to the town of Radom and spent the night there.

I took a commercial cargo vehicle from Radom to Warsaw. It was a terrible journey since it was unbearably bumpy all the way. My insides were turning every which way. The bridges were repaired in a hurry and we were afraid they would break as we crossed. Finally we got to Warsaw by 6pm and I stayed at the hotel “Luxembourg.” At the office of the commandant I was told that the Germans are already 50 versts away from Warsaw.

I’ve spent this time in Warsaw. Because I was not staying in the hospital and was instead treated at home, I was able to watch the life of a city in the rear, away from the frontline. Carousing, rumors, gambling … Artillery lieutenant Brovich got into such a dirty drunk argument that he ended up in police protocol.

On December 7 a feeling of jubilation filled all the papers – the Serbs achieved victory. The Germans were conducting airstrikes and dropped bombs. This was not a chivalrous thing for them to do.

General Pleshkov’s adjutant told me that every day they send hundreds of Cossacks to catch wandering soldiers, and thus have 3000 new troops a day.

On December 12 my wife came and brought care packages from my relatives. I hadn’t seen her for two and a half months. How time flies!

At 1 pm we left on a light rail dolly for the city of Groitsa. We travelled 48 versus in 4 hours. The weather was terrible – rainy and cold. We then traveled 14 versts from Groitsa on a “grain cart” and once again met up with our regiment. My rain gear was covered in ice. It is not pleasant to be in the trenches in such weather.

Finally I am with my squadron. In the time that I was gone, our division moved from the 2nd Army to the 5th Army under General Pleve, the commander of which was General-Lietenant Miller. I rushed to get there and ended up arriving in time for a 10 day break.

We are staying at a Folwark owned by a not-so-wealthy Polish landlady. The mail arrived and I received letters from October 10. I got my pack in order. The squadron is re-shoeing the horses.

Our landlady is a nice old woman. She told us about the German campaign on Warsaw and how one German general was taken prisoner by our forces when he was in a drunken state. He was yelling, “To Warsaw!”, thinking he was giving the command to his troops. Yesterday Lieutenant Posazhnoy was sent on leave to Warsaw, and today so was Lieutenant Golikov. Lieutenant Ivanenko and Cornet Yankushevich are already there. It’s said that Cornet Sorokin will return soon, once he recovers, but the Captain of the headquarters, Toporkov, will not return to the regiment for a long time – his wounds are not healing. There are many officers in our squadron, but Captain Domozhirov and I are in charge.

The weather is terrible. It snowed last night and there was a frost. Today it rained again. Life is hard for infantry in the trenches.

Today I received a letter from Petrograd dated December 10 — an occurrence worth noting. Usually it takes months for letters to reach us. Today spring was in the air; the snow is melting. I am putting the squadron’s maps in order. The Hussars build a bathhouse out of one of the huts and are enjoying it. How can it be that Poles don’t have a tradition of bathhouses?

Rumors are the Germans are retreating, since our allies are on the offensive.

At 1 pm today, Seargant-Major Rossiev left for Warsaw and I sent an entire packet of letters with him. Rumor has it that all the officers from the 14th Cavalry Division were incorporated into the infantry, since they have a deficit.

Almost everybody from our regiment is in Warsaw. There is nobody here. Once again it is quite cold.

We spent Christmas Eve in comfortable lodgings, in other words we stayed in that same half-collapsed house. In the morning the squadron commander Captain Domozhirov left for Warsaw and I took over for him temporarily as the head of the squadron.

At 4 pm the squadron priest arrived and led Christmas service. The squadron gathered on the square in front of the manor house. It was warm and the Poles came out of their houses to watch this unparalleled performance. I very much enjoyed the service. We remembered those Hussars who had fallen in battle and hoped for victory for ourselves and our allies.

For the entire time of our break, we received newspapers almost without interruption. Some of the articles that described the battles were very good. All the newspapers were filled with information about the awful behavior of the Germans to their prisoners of war. There were stories that at times they shot them for the fun of it. I don’t believe it.

Yesterday I received a letter from my wife from October 17.

The Village of Domianki.

After a three-day stay in Warsaw, I returned to the regiment. I could have stayed there for two more days but would have felt uncomfortable doing so, seeing as the commander of the squadron was left alone. The village is 12 versts from Warsaw. The apartment is good. The worst part is that when I arrived back at the squadron, I learned that Domozhirov had left for the city. It looks like I will have to spend New Year’s alone.
