Salvete omnes! (Hello everybody!)
Latin Club is a fun way for younger students to encounter Latin and ancient Roman culture, and to learn some English vocabulary and grammar as well. There will be games, songs, crafts, and various projects.
The Latin Club will meet on Mondays, starting November 10, 2014, and continuing through late April, 2015, from 4:30 to 5:30 PM in the East College building at Dickinson College. East College in on N. West St. between High and Louther Streets. Here is a link to Google Maps that shows the area and parking. There is free parking on High St., Louther St., and West St. in the vicinity of East College. The classics department in on the first floor.
There are three sessions: one for grades K-2, one for grades 3-5, and one for grades 6-8. The sessions will meet separately and concurrently in three rooms in Dickinson’s East College building. Session will be led by students of Dickinson College and Trinitiy High School, under the supervision of Ms. Roman and Dr. Francese.
All three clubs will meet in the lobby at 4:30 on Monday November 3 2014. We will divide the students up into their appropriate sessions from there. Please stay and meet the magistri (instructors), Chris, and me, if you can on the first day. Parents are more than welcome to participate in all activities.
Latin Club will meet every Monday when Dickinson classes are in session. Note that this does not always correspond to the school district schedule. We will send out reminders around holiday time to keep you up to speed. You can always check this site for updates as well, or contact us.
The club is free, and is supported by the Dickinson Classics department, through the Roberts Fund for Classical Studies. This fund will be used to purchase materials for crafts and so forth. The only thing we may ask you for money for is a t-shirt if we decide to order them.
I would like to make this easy and fun for the parents as well as the kids. If there is anything we can adjust to make it easier logistically, just let me know. You are more than welcome to stay, or not, as you wish. We are very much looking forward to meeting you and your children. All the best,
Parents are always welcome at Latin Club, but there will be a special “Parents’ Day” on April 27, 2015 to showcase the things that your children have learned and the work that they have done in Latin Club. Please plan on attending Parents’ Day, as it will be a great opportunity to celebrate your child and his or her commitment to Latin!
On March 2, 2015, all three sessions of Latin students will be combining for a special planetarium show. Latin Club will meet in the planetarium and Dr. Francese will be teaching the students about the myths associated with the constellations.
