The Gifts of Venus (Lucretius, De rerum natura 1.1-20)
Lucretius’ poem on nature opens with an invocation addressed not to the Muses but to Venus, goddess of love and sex.
[audio:http://blogs.dickinson.edu/archive/images/lucretius-11-20.mp3]Aeneadum genetrix, hominum divumque voluptas,
alma Venus, caeli subter labentia signa
quae mare navigerum, quae terras frugiferentis
concelebras, per te quoniam genus omne animantum
concipitur visitque exortum lumina solis: 5
te, dea, te fugiunt venti, te nubila caeli
adventumque tuum, tibi suavis daedala tellus
summittit flores, tibi rident aequora ponti
placatumque nitet diffuso lumine caelum.
nam simul ac species patefactast verna diei 10
et reserata viget genitabilis aura Favoni,
aeriae primum volucres te, diva, tuumque
significant initum perculsae corda tua vi.
inde ferae pecudes persultant pabula laeta 15
et rapidos tranant amnes: ita capta lepore 14
te sequitur cupide quo quamque inducere pergis. 16
denique per maria ac montes fluviosque rapaces
frondiferasque domos avium camposque virentes
omnibus incutiens blandum per pectora amorem
efficis ut cupide generatim saecla propagent. 20

Thank you. Delightful to ponder with Venus midway up the Western sky just after sunset and the full force of natura upon us.
