I’ve only just returned today. I was delayed because of a spy, who turned out to be a German who spoke good Russian. Когда я прочел с трибуны “декларацию”, то поднялся такой гам и свист, что я предпочел “благородно ретироваться”.

I was in the Duma. First, I listened to the speeches of various speakers: Zinoviev (a Bolshevik), Filonenko, and others. Lieutenant Kuzmin, Assistant Commander of the troops of the Petrograd Military District, and Colonel Yakubovich, Comrade War Minister, also spoke. These two were definitely in favor of the offensive. When I read the “Declaration” from the rostrum, there was such commotion and whistling that I preferred to “retreat with honor.”

Утром занимаюсь с эскадроном и пока доволен. Корнет де Боде не хватает звезд с неба, но честный, старательный и исполнительный офицер. Прапорщик Ушаков на вид красная девица, но отчетлив и рвется в бой.
This morning I’ve been working with the squadron and so far, I’m satisfied. Cornet de Bode isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but he is an honest, diligent, and efficient officer. Ensign Ushakov looks like a shrinking violet but is articulate and eager to fight.
Вчера поздно вечером прибыло 1050 человек пополнения из города Сызрани. Сегодня их разбили по эскадронам. С этого дня надо считать, что Стрелковый полк действительно развернулся, поэтому я завел журнал военных действий 11-го стрелкового эскадрона.

Позавчера я выехал из Пскова, а вчера приехал а полк. Пополнение из тыла еще не пришло. Ездивший туда делегат от полка ротмистр Ломиковский сказал, что может быть, пополнение прибудет 2 мая, то есть с опозданием на 2 месяца.

Был приказ снять офицерам, солдатам и матросам погоны, как это принято в других республиканских армиях. Что решит Учредительное собрание – неизвестно, поэтому “сознательные граждане” стали срывать погоны с офицеров и солдат. Разруха усиливается.

There was an order for officers, soldiers, and sailors to remove the shoulder straps, as is customary in other national armies. It’s unclear what the Constituent Assembly will decide, and so “concerned citizens” have begun to tear off the shoulder straps off officers’ and soldiers’ uniforms. The disorder is intensifying.
