I handed the squadron over to Captain Barnov when he returned, and tomorrow I must take all the supernumerary people and horses in the reserve cavalry regiment to Syzran.

Сегодня германский аэроплан бросал бомбы над эскадроном, но ветер их сильно сносил. Кажется, что в полку будет по 10 офицеров на эскадрон, а всех рядов во время боя не более 10.

Today a German airplane dropped bombs over the squadron, but the wind blew them strongly off course. It seems that in the regiment there will be 10 officers to each squadron but no more than 10 ranks in battle.

Я купил обратно у поручика Руммеля свою лошадь. Генерал Нилов сказал, что всех офицеров-безлошадников переведет в пехоту и запретил давать фуражные деньги. У нас чуть ли не вся молодежь без собственных лошадей.

I bought my horse back from Lieutenant Rummel. General Nilov said that he is moving all the officers without horses to infantry and refused to give out money for fodder. Almost none of our young soldiers have their own horses.

Время идет. Приехали 9 прапорщиков из пажей. Офицеров у нас хоть отбавляй, на 3 полка хватит.

Вместо похода пришел приказ исключить из списков полка всех сверхштатных людей и лошадей. Так как они дают нам силу – 16 рядов во взводе, то без них вряд ли будет 11 рядов. Сегодня по случаю праздника дня Восшествия на престол Государя Императора занятий нет.

Time goes by. 9 warrant officers arrived from the Page Corps. We have too many officers; there are enough for 3 regiments.

Instead of continuing our campaign we received an order to exclude all supernumerary people and horses from the regiment’s records. Since they are strengthening us—16 ranks in the platoon—without them there will hardly be 11 ranks. Today there are no exercises because we are celebrating the day of the Sovereign Emperor’s accession to the throne.

Идут занятия. Каждую ночь падает снег и остается до полудня. От скуки играем в карты.

We are doing exercises. Every night it snows and the snow stays on the ground until noon. We are playing cards out of boredom.

Ротмистр Барнов уехал на месяц в отпуск, и я остался за командира эскадрона.

Captain Barnov has gone on leave for a month, and I have been left in charge of the squadron.

Холодно и сыро. Грустно и тоскливо. Праздник 3-его эскадрона, и ротмистр Глебов угощал гостей самогоном.

It is cold and damp. I am sad and melancholy. The 3rd Squadron had a festival, and Captain Glebov treated the guests to homemade vodka.

Командующий дивизией генерал Нилов делал смотр полку, была выводка лошадей, осмотр оружия и снаряжения. Снова говорят, что мы пойдем в Румынию.

The division commander General Nilov did an inspection of the regiment today; there were inspections of the horses, weapons, and equipment. We are again being told that we will go to Romania.

Одному жить скучно. Так как Барнов 3 октября пойдет в отпуск, я хочу до этого проветриться. Сегодня я прибыл в Петроград. Брат мой Георгий, может быть, скоро вернется из плена.

Living alone is tedious. Since Barnov is going on leave on October 3rd, I want to have a change of scene before then. Today I arrived in Petrograd. My brother Georgy will, perhaps, return from his captivity soon.
