Приятно двигаться в поход, а то засиделись в одном месте. Мы покинули пределы Витебской губернии и попали в Лифляндию. Я шел с головным отрядом. При мне вся молодежь, корнеты и прапорщики «для обучения». На фольварке Марин-Зее сделали привал. Сестры милосердия на славу угостили гусар и офицеров. Масс клубники, в лесах черника и земляника, и мы ее собираем. Народ здесь побогаче, и живут латыши хуторами. Выступили в 11 часов, и в 10 часов вечера были на месте. День отличный, но 2 раза брызгал дождь.

It is nice to continue our campaign, since we stayed in one place for so long. We left behind the borders of the Vitebsk province and came to Liflyandia. I walked with the vanguard. All the young soldiers, cornets, and warrant officers were with me “for training.” We made a stop at the folwark of Marin-Zee. The Sisters of Mercy did a wonderful job hosting the Hussars and officers. There are lots of strawberries, and bilberries and wild strawberries in the woods, and we are collecting them. The people here are somewhat wealthy, and the Latvians live on farmsteads. We marched out at 11 o’clock, and by 10 o’clock in the evening we were here. It was a lovely day, but there were 2 rain showers.

Немцы мстят артиллерийским обстрелом. Надо сказать, что служба в окопах нетрудная. Окопы на 2-ой год обратились местами в аллеи, много цветов, крыжовник, малина и смородина склоняют в них ветки.

Мы во время стрельбы вошли в уцелевший домик впереди окопов и «дулись» в преферанс, пока один снаряд не разорвался в соседней комнате. Тогда мы перешли в мой блиндаж.

Неожиданно сообщили из штаба полка, что завтра смена.

The Germans are retaliating with artillery fire. It must be said that serving in the trenches is not difficult. Two years in, the trenches have turned into walkways in some places. There are many flowers, gooseberries, raspberries, and currants leaning in by their branches.

During the shooting we went into a little house still standing in front of the trenches and played Preferans with “abandon,” until one shell exploded in the next room. Then we moved to my dugout.

The regiment headquarters unexpectedly announced that we will be relieved tomorrow.

Ровно в 12 часов ночи корнет Янишевский с 8 гусарами на поплавках из камыша поплыли на германский берег через Двину. Накануне делали опыты: человек, винтовка, 15 патронов и 2 ручные гранаты на воде держались легко. Патроны, винтовки и гранаты были густо смазаны салом. Янишевский – молодчина и храбрец большой, только плавает неважно. Так и вышло. В темноте пловцов разбросало, и он довольно скоро вернулся, а 3 человека унтер-офицеры Разгоняев, Корчагин и Манкевич ступили на немецкий берег и бросили в немецкий патруль бомбу. Немцы открыли огонь. Все 3 унтер-офицера были ранены и поплыли обратно. Манкевич пропал.

At exactly 12 o’clock at night Cornet Yanishevsky and 8 Hussars crossed the Dvina to the German shore on reed rafts. They ran experiments the day before: a man, a rifle, 15 cartridges, and 2 hand grenades were easily supported on the water. The cartridges, rifles, and grenades were heavily greased with lard. Yanishevsky is a fine man and a very brave person, but he cannot navigate water very well. This is what happened. The rafters were scattered in the dark, and he returned rather quickly, but 3 people—the non-commissioned officers Razgoniaev, Korchagin, and Mankevich—set foot on the German shore and threw a bomb at the German patrol. The Germans opened fire. All three non-commissioned officers were wounded and crossed back over. Mankevich perished.

Немцы строят окопы по ночам возле самого берега. Наши хотят устроить переправу с целью взятия «контрольных пленных».

The Germans are digging trenches right next to the riverbank by night. Our men want to arrange a crossing with the aim of capturing “test prisoners.”

Вчера наш полк занял позицию от фольварка Авсеевка до Буйвеска. Наш 6–ой эскадрон в центре. Ночью в 4-ом эскадроне был убит вводный унтер-офицер, а сегодня во 2-ом эскадроне случайно разорвавшейся гранатой ранено 9 человек.

На юге успех – французы, англичане и итальянцы наступают.

Yesterday our regiment assumed a position from the folwark of Avseevka to Buiveska. Our 6th Squadron is in the center. In the 4th Squadron the leading non-commissioned officer was killed in the night, and today in the 2nd Squadron 9 people were wounded by a grenade that accidentally exploded.

There is success to the south—the French, the English, and the Italians are advancing.

Вчера и сегодня отличная погода. Сегодня был смотр стрелковому дивизиону при 5-ой кавалерийской дивизии полковника Хондзынского. Смотрел командир корпуса Павлов. Я поехал из любопытства. Ничего, молодцами показались. Сегодня, впервые за всю войну казначей выдал жалование нам вовремя.

Наша 1-ая бригада в окопах. Драгуны и уланы плавали к немцам через Двину. Взяли одного пленного и пулемет, который утопили при обратной переправе домой. Еще сообщают, что наши потери 4 убитых и 15 раненных. Партизанский отряд при нашей дивизии расформирован. Это правильно, никчемный он был.

Yesterday and today the weather was excellent. Today there was an inspection of the rifle division from Colonel Khondzynsky’s 5th Cavalry Division. Corps Commander Pavlov did the inspection. I went out of curiosity. It went fine and they presented themselves well. Today the paymaster gave us our salaries on time for the first time since the war started.

Our First Brigade is in the trenches. The dragoons and uhlans crossed the Dvina to the Germans by boat. They took one prisoner and a machine gun that the enemy dropped in the water while crossing back home. It has also been announced that our casualties are 4 dead and 15 wounded. The partisan detachment affiliated with our division was disbanded. This is for the best; it was useless.

Опять смотр. Сегодня в 1 час дня выступили к станции Вышки на смотр главнокомандующим Северного Фронта генерала Куропаткина. Смотр был в 6 часов и вернулись в 11 часов. Все время шел дождь, я промок до костей. Куропаткин здоровался отдельно с каждым эскадроном, благодарил за службу, но с новым походом не поздравил. Пропускал нас мимо себя на шагу, грязь была страшная.

Вчера 3-ий корпус графа Келлера взял в плен 10 тысяч солдат, 240 офицеров и орудия. Генерал Куропаткин собрал командиров эскадронов, опять благодарил за службу, говорил, что мы сильнее немцев на 1б5 миллиона штыков, что только ждут снарядов, и тогда перейдем в наступление. Генерал Куропаткин – на вид симпатичный старичок.

Another inspection. Today at 1 o’clock in the afternoon we were released to the Vyshky station for an inspection by the head commander of the Northern Front, General Kuropatkin. The inspection was at 6 o’clock and we returned at 11 o’clock. It rained the whole time; I was soaked to the bone. Kuropatkin greeted each squadron individually and thanked us for our service, but he did not congratulate us on our new campaign. He let us pass him by a few paces; the mud was dreadful.

Yesterday Count Keller’s 3rd Corps took 10 thousand soldiers, 240 officers, and weapons. General Kuropatkin gathered the commanders of the squadrons and thanked us again for our service. He said that we are 165 million men stronger than the Germans and that as soon as the ammunition arrives, we will transition to advancing. General Kuropatkin looks like a nice little old man.

Пора смотров. Сегодня в 7 часов утра был смотр нашей 2-ой бригады командующим 1-ой Армией генералом Литвиновым. Он поздравил нас со скорым походом. Говорит, что мы скоро бросим окопы и поработаем на конях.

It is time for inspections. Today at 7 o’clock in the morning our 2nd Brigade was inspected by General Litvinov, commander of the 1st Army. He congratulated us on our upcoming campaign. He says that we will soon leave the trenches and work on horseback.

Вчера и сегодня были боевые учения. Учились в страшной грязи.

Yesterday and today there was battle training. We trained in dreadful mud.

Сдал эскадрон приехавшему ротмистру Барнову. У меня накопилось много сроков временного командования, но пока они не засчитываются. На юге идут встречные бои.

Занимаясь с эскадроном в эти дни, я учил только исключительно боевым действиям. Жаль, что кони не используются, они стали какими-то свиньями, а Барнов доволен и не позволяет втягивать лошадей.

I handed over the squadron to Captain Barnov after he arrived. I have accumulated many periods of temporary command, but they have not yet been taken into account. Encounter battles are going on in the south.

I am occupied with the squadron these days, and so have only taught military operations. It is a pity that the horses are not being used; they have become like some kind of pigs, but Barnov is satisfied and is not allowing us to involve the horses.
