Опять ветер и дождь. Реки сильно разлились. Дороги стали ужасными. В то время, когда пленным немцам, судя по газетам, дают ½ фунта мяса, мы получаем ¼ фунта, и то не каждый день. Прибежавший из плена немец говорил, что наши получают от немцев не более 1/2 фунта хлеба и гороховую похлебку. Не знаю, есть ли у наших властей самолюбие или оно уже продано немцам.

It is windy and rainy again. The rivers have greatly overflowed. The roads have become awful. According to the newspapers, the German prisoners are given ½ of a funt of meat, while we receive ¼ of a funt, and not every day. A German who escaped his imprisonment said that our men receive no more than ½ a funt of bread and pea soup from the Germans. I do not know if our authorities still have any pride or if it has already been sold to the Germans.

Наконец дождь перестал, и наступила ясная погода. Наши взяли Черновицы и 23 тысячи пленных.

The rain has finally stopped and clear weather has arrived. Our men took Chernovitsy and 23 thousand prisoners.

Генерал Брусилов взял 164 тысячи пленных. Наши не могут взять только Черновицы. Ротмистр Барнов и корнет Ланген уехали, в эскадроне я и Янишевский.

Идет дождь, дует ветер, писем нет. Скучно и тоскливо. Веду словесные занятия в эскадроне.

Пока сидим на месте и даже прислано из штаба полка расписание занятий на 3 недели. А по-моему, надо идти вперед. Погода дивная, и настроение отличное. Я давно приготовил свое седло к бою. Все собрано как нельзя лучше. Парабеллум на правом переднем вьюке, а Браунинг на себе.

For the time being we are staying in place and have even been sent a schedule of activities for the next 3 weeks by the regiment headquarters. But in my opinion, we need to advance. The weather is marvelous and morale is excellent. I prepared my saddle for battle long ago. Everything could not be more ready. I keep my Parabellum in my right front pack and my Browning on me.

Our advance to the south yielded 11,300 prisoners, 130 cannons, and 200 machine guns. In this way, it seems, we saved Italy. I think that it is time for our northern front to move forward as well. I am already dreaming again of cavalry battles. I think that within 2–3 days we will march out. As long as we are not ordered to go south, by the fall of 1917 there will be victorious peace.

В Псков я приехал вечером, а сегодня в 5 часов утра вернулся в эскадрон. Приятно побывать в тылу после грязных деревушек, а тем более повидать жену.

I arrived in Pskov in the evening, and today I returned to the squadron at 5 o’clock in the morning. It is pleasant to visit the rear front after being in the dirty hamlets, but it is even more pleasant to see my wife.

Вчера катался по железной дороге до Двинска. Был в питательном пункте Пуришкевича. Из Двинска приехал в 1 час ночи и получил известие из штаба корпуса от поручика Астафьева, что наши начали наступать на юг и взяли 13 тысяч пленных и много добычи. Ночью под Иллукстом шел бой. Канонада слышна адская. Что это значит, пока не знаю, хотя Иллукст в 10 верстах от нас. Днем немцы стреляли по станции Ликсно и убили 3 солдат.

Yesterday I traveled to Dvinsk by railroad. I went to Purishkevich’s meal station. I arrived back from Dvinsk at 1 o’clock at night and received news from Lieutenant Astafiev from the corps headquarters—our men began to advance to the south and took 13 thousand prisoners and many spoils. There was a battle outside Ilūkste in the night. A hellish cannonade could be heard. What this means I do not yet know, although Illukst is 10 versts from us. During the day the Germans shot at the Līksna station and killed 3 soldiers.

Ездил смотреть на опыт уничтожения проволочных заграждений французскими гранатами. 3 ряда заграждений были сбиты 600 гранатами с расстояния 3 версты. В 1-ом ряду проход в 21 шаг, во 2-ом и 3-ем в 15-16 шагов.

Лечим зубы в 3-ей летучке Земского Союза. А в общем – тоска. Надо наступать, иначе разобьют итальянцев. Мы никогда не наступаем все вместе, точно жалеем немцев. Надо всем дружно ударить со всех сторон, тогда бы немцы не знали, куда посылать резервы.

Четверть фунта мяса, и то не каждый день. В некоторых частях пехоты уже появилась цинга.

I went to see the attempt to destroy wire entanglements with French grenades. 3 rows of barriers were taken out by 600 grenades from a distance of 3 versts. In the 1st row the opening is 21 paces wide; in the 2nd and 3rd rows it is 15–16 paces wide.

We are having our teeth treated at the 3rd Zemstvo Union briefing. But in general things are melancholic. We need to advance, otherwise the Italians will be beaten. We never advance all together; we are really going easy on the Germans. Everyone needs to strike together from all sides; then the Germans would not know where to send their reserves.

I am getting a quarter funt of meat, and not every day. Scurvy has already appeared in a few infantry divisions.

Снова я за командира эскадрона. Сегодня делал пробег. Переседлывая лошадей на каждом посту летучей почты, я проехал 90 верст до фольварка Рожанова и обратно. Выехал в 9часов 10 минут утра, а вернулся в 8 часов 40 минут вечера. 1 час 30 минут пошло на переседлывание лошадей 15 раз, 1 час на обед в штабе 6-ого кавалерийского корпуса на фольварке Варково, 30 минут на чай в штабе 15ой кавалерийской дивизии в деревне Рожаново. Устал я сравнительно мало. Везде идет починка дорог, но Бог даст, мы будем осенью не здесь, а поближе к Германии.

Once again I am in charge of the squadron. Today I traveled a long distance. Changing horses at every airmail post, I went 90 versts to the folwark of Rozhanovo and back. I left at 9:10 in the morning and returned at 8:40 in the evening. I spent an hour and 30 minutes changing out the horses 15 times, an hour at lunch at the 6th Cavalry Corps headquarters in the folwark of Varkovo, and 30 minutes at tea at the 15th Cavalry Division headquarters in the village of Rozhanovo. Relatively speaking, I am not very tired. Road repairs are going on everywhere, but God willing, we will not be here in the fall, but rather closer to Germany.

Сегодня ездил в Двинск. Поезд ходил только до станции Ружа. До Двинска 14 верст. Сделал покупки. Вчера туда ездил ротмистр Барнов и привез новость, что якобы наш командир полка полковник Коленкин получает бригаду в 15-ой кавалерийской дивизии, а будто бы полк получит герцог Лихтенбергский.

Today I went to Dvinsk. The train only went as far as the Ruzha station. It was 14 versts to Dvinsk. I made some purchases. Yesterday Captain Barnov went there and brought back the news that apparently our regiment commander Colonel Kolenkin is receiving the brigade into the 15th Cavalry Division, and it seems that the regiment is receiving the Duke of Lichtenberg.
