I watched as the Sovereign and the Grand Princesses arrived at the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral for the memorial service.

Yesterday our regiment fasted. We went to the church where our priest served. Today there is a communion service. Tomorrow I must get machine guns for my regiment.

В 7 часов утра выехал из Пскова, ив 2 часа дня был ужу в эскадроне, но пришла телеграмма о смерти бабушки, и в 4 часа я выехал обратно в Петроград.

I left Pskov at 7 am and I was already with the squadron by 2 pm, however a telegram arrived about my grandmother’s death and I left again for Petrograd at 4 pm.

Вчера сам командир полка неожиданно предложил мне отпуск, и я попал в Петроград. Полк стоит в резерве до 17 февраля, потом, говорят, что вся дивизия 24 дня будет стоять на отдыхе, и, может быть, пойдем в Персию.

Yesterday the commanding officer of the regiment unexpectedly offered me a leave of absence and I found myself in Petrograd. The regiment is in reserve until February 17th. They say that the entire division will then be on a break for 24 days and that we might go to Persia.

Наше сиденье в окопах стоит полку: 2 гусара убиты, 3 ранены. Получены сведения, что Эрзерум взят.

Our sitting in the trenches has cost the regiment: 2 Hussars killed and 3 wounded. We received information that Erzerum has been taken.

The squadron is scattered in cabins scattered across the field. Yanishevsky, Astafyev, and Karamzin are with me in the dugout. The Germans are shooting. A bullet wounded Lieutenant Shlikhting.

Встали в 6 часов утра и пошли на сборный пункт, а оттуда на позицию к станции Ливенгоф. В 8 часам вечера пришли туда. На позиции можно было оставить половину офицеров, поэтому я решил отвести коноводов сам, пришел только к 12 часам ночи.

We got up at 6 am and went to the assembly point, and from there we proceeded to a position at the Livenhof Station. We arrived there at 8 pm. Half of the officers could be left in this position, and so I decided to take the horse handlers to their location myself. It was already midnight by the time I arrived.

С утра отличная погода. Делал стрельбу эскадрону и примерную атаку с ручными гранатами. Оказывается, приехавший из отпуска гусар, а ныне унтер-офицер Манкевич был в плену и бежал. Он вернулся в эскадрон во время моего пребывания в Петрограде. Бежал он из плена в октябре 1914 г. из города Калиш с работ, шел почти 5 месяцев с одним пехотинцем и вышел совершенно случайно на полк этого друга, но тому не повезло, он был убит на проволоке родного полка.

Новый корнет нашего эскадрона Янишевский тоже был в плену и бежал. Он имеет все 4 степени солдатского Георгиевского креста.

The weather has been excellent since morning. I conducted shooting drills with my squadron and demonstrated an example of an attack with hand grenades. It turns out that Mankevich, a hussar who has returned from leave, and who is now a non-commissioned officer, had been a prisoner but escaped. He returned to the squadron during my stay in Petrograd. He escaped from captivity in October 1914 from Kalisz, while he was at work. Together with one of the infantrymen, he walked for nearly 5 months before, completely by chance, happening upon his friend’s regiment; however this friend had no such luck, as he was killed by his own regiment’s wire.

A new Cornet in our squadron, Yanishevsky, was also held prisoner and escaped. He holds all four degrees of the soldier’s St. George’s cross.
