Keith Fischer ’02- WDCV Sports Broadcasting Advisor- To Be Inducted Into Dickinson Sports Hall of Fame

Keith Fischer ’02, WDCV’s Sport Broadcasting Advisor, is a humble guy who probably didn’t want to make a big deal about him getting inducted into the Dickinson Sports Hall of Fame for Football…..so he didn’t tell us.  The internet is great for finding out these bits of info though, so as we looked at the Homecoming Schedule (WDCV is planning a BIG celebration that weekend for our 50th Anniversary) we noticed this post about the football game.

Returning DJ Info Session

Welcome back Dickinsonians!!  We can’t wait to get you back on the air so this year we are fast tracking our info session so we can start broadcasting this weekend.  There will be an info session for RETURNING DJs on Tuesday August 28th at 7pm in Stafford Audtiorium.  If you miss it,  you can attend one of the NEW DJ info sessions September 5th & 6th(wed. & thur) at 7pm in Tome 115.  You MUST attend one of these to get a show so you have 3 chances if you are a returning DJ.  This might be our best semester EVER.  It’s our 50th Anniversary and we are planning some BIG stuff for Homecoming Weekend.  We hope you will be DJ again so you can be part of it.  We can’t wait to see you all again!

***Community DJs don’t have to attend this meeting. Email wdcvfm@gmail.com if you can no longer do your show or need to change the time.***

Weekly Free Shows at Messiah College

Our little Central Pa valley has quite a few colleges packed between the mountains.  We like to keep up with what shows are going on locally so we can know if a road trip is in order.  For the past few years, Messiah has put on a great weekly show series called b sides.  Every Wednesday there is another band playing for in their student union.  You may not have heard of the bands, but that shouldn’t stop you from paying them a visit.  Free weekly live music is a bonus no matter how small the band.

How People Listen to Music via NPR & Nielson

We have often heard that only about 20% of college students come to school with a radio.  We consider this statistic when we try to grow our audience by thinking of different ways to connect with people both on and off campus.  We often broadcast Live on Britton Plaza and at downtown events so we can meet people in our community and come out of the shadows of the HUB basement.  NPR posted this blog today that showed a rather interesting breakdown of how teens listen to music.  We are surprised and encouraged to find that 56% of teens still listen to the radio.  When we looked at the data that this graph was taken from, we were even more encouraged.

Nielson has a whole report on how people discover music.  So how do most people still find music? RADIO! We are pleased as punch that people still respect and use this medium.  Why do people like radio?  It’s free.  It’s always on.  You don’t have to think of what you want to listen to, you just have to know what stations give you the news, information and music that you like.  Also, some stations still have real djs.  Live people playing music just for you.  How nice:)

We also believe that College Radio is still very important even in this world of changing media.  College Radio is one of the few remaining un-commerialized forms of mass media. Our students can start broadcasting the first year they get on campus.  We hope that teens (and adults) will continue enjoying and supporting College Radio.  We turn 50 this year and we are planning on being around for a long, long time.

WDCV 50th Anniversary in 2012!!

Hello WDCV Alumni!

Did you know that this year we are celebrating WDCV’s 50th anniversary? It’s true! We’re planning a big celebration over Homecoming & Family Weekend, so mark your calendars for Sept. 28-30, 2012!

To prepare for our big 5-0, we want to reconnect with the people who have made the station what it is today—our alumni. We have a list of alumni who have noted WDCV as one of their activities; however, there are probably plenty of alumni out there with whom we would love to reconnect, even if they only took a few spins at the station. We hope you will pass this information their way so we can gather as much WDCV history as possible.

Our goal is to gather items to create a WDCV online showcase that chronicles the last 50 fun-filled years. We have been digging through the archives and yearbooks for references to the station. In addition to your stories, we hope you will share any WDCV-related pictures, posters and memorabilia lurking in your garages.

Also, we would love to hear from you about your time at WDCV! To make this the best 50th anniversary, we hope you can help us gather more information about the station by filling out this quick survey.

To share your stories, memorabilia or posters from your days at WDCV, e-mail wdcvalumni@gmail.com.  You may send digital images of photos or memorabilia, but if you would be interested in donating the originals to the archives, send them to us at the address listed on the right. Have any old recordings?  We’d love to hear those as well, so feel free to share old shows, stories or recordings. If you have any questions, contact us directly and we will find a way to help!

We hope you will stay in touch with WDCV through our Web site wdcvfm.com and our Facebook and Twitter pages. We are just in the planning stages of the celebration, so we welcome your ideas.

Here’s to 50 years—let’s make this the biggest WDCV reunion ever!

Thank you,

WDCV Exec Board
