Hello and Welcome

Hey Everyone!

My name is Avery McGuire and I am the new Center for Sustainability Education Biking @ Dickinson intern. This means I will be handling all things bike related this semester. I will be managing The Handlebar (our on-campus bike shop) as well as coordinating bike related events and sharing fun facts, news, and information with you all right here on this blog so be sure to check back frequently!

A little bit about me:

I just returned from a year abroad studying in Sweden, a country just as hooked on biking as I am. There, everyone (young and old) rides their bike rain or shine, snow or sleet, darkness or light. There are more bikes parked in front of the grocery stores and train stations then there are cars!

I have always loved to ride my bike and I recently became interested in long distance cycling. I bought my first road bike several years ago and now on the weekends I can be found miles from town joy riding through the countryside. Whether riding around town, commuting to and from work, or going out on long rides; biking brings a liberating sense of freedom and a deeper connection with the world around you that I hope to share with the Dickinson Community.

Plans for the semester:

Interested in volunteering at The Handlebar?

No skills necessary just come on by willing to learn and we will teach you the basics. If you want to get involved this semester email the biking@dickinson.edu account and we will be sure to inform you of the training session and shop open hours.  We will also be hosting a volunteer training session during which we will go over basic bike maintenance skills and necessary information about working at The Handlebar (date and time TBA).

Group rides and events:

We will be hosting some group rides including Bike to the Farm Potluck on Friday September 28th (more information to here) as well as some other cycling events.

Green Bikes:

The Handlebar’s Green Bike program has already proved to be a big hit; all of our bikes have been loaned out for the semester but there is a waiting list. We hope to build more bikes this semester to add to the fleet so if you want to help build bikes come to the Handlebar during open hours.

If you want to be in the know about bike related events in and around campus join the Dickinson biking listserv. Click the link to subscribe.

Also, if you stumble upon any interesting bike related info you wish to share with the Dickinson Community, send it my way and you can be featured in a guest post on the blog.

The Handlebar will be open from 5-8 on Thursdays as well as some additional hours to be posted soon. Come stop by and check it out!
