Насколько тепло было в апреле, настолько холодно теперь. Мы пока все в резерве. Ездил осматривать костел в Ликсно. Немцы пробили его в 4 местах. Кругом громадные воронки. По- видимому, у немцев дальнобойные орудия, так как их позиции в 10 верстах. Цветет сирень, яблоня и т.д.

It is as cold now as it was warm in April. For the time being we are all in the reserves. I went to inspect a church in Līksna. The Germans blew holes in it in 4 places. There were huge craters around it. Apparently, the Germans have long-range cannons, since they were positioned 10 versts away. Lilacs, apple blossoms, and such are blooming.

Поехал в эскадрон, после того, как провел несколько часов в Двинске и совсем ожил. Все можно купить, но мало мяса. Но теперь и в войсках его нет. Это печально. Наша матушка Русь богата, а дают мясо солдатам чуть не раз в неделю по четверть фунта. Говорят, что возможны беспорядки внутри России. Теперь понятно, почему хотят формировать казачьи дивизии и отобрано оружие у населения. Скорей бы наступать. Нам бы только сбить немцев, а там мы пойдем вперед. Думаю, что лето покажет многое, и если у нас будет успех, то к декабрю 1917 года будет мир.

I traveled to the squadron after spending several hours in Dvinsk, and now I feel fully revived. It is possible to buy everything, though there is little meat. But now there is no meat even among the troops. It is regrettable. Our mother Rus is abundant, but soldiers are each given a quarter funt [1] of meat barely once a week. It is said that there may be uprisings within Russia. Now I understand why they want to form Cossack divisions and why weapons were taken away from the people. If only we would advance more quickly. If we could just take down the Germans, then we could move forward. I think the summer will reveal a great deal, and if we are successful, there will be peace by December of 1917.

Сегодня прочел приказ по 5-ой кавалерийской дивизии, где сказано: «Из представленных мне дневников офицеров-наблюдателей, наиболее выдающимися и содержательными с военной оценкой позиций противника и выводами являются дневники штаб-офицера Петрушевского и прапорщика Янова, которых я благодарю особо».

Today I read the order concerning the Fifth Cavalry Division, which declares: “Of the monitoring officers’ diaries that have been presented to me, the most outstanding and meaningful in terms of military assessment of the enemy’s position and conclusions are the diaries of Staff Officer Petrushevsky and Warrant Officer Yanov, both of whom I especially thank.”

I went to the city of Toropets on an assignment, where I received linens and boots for our entire division.

Выкачал около 100 ведер воды из моей землянки. По участку эскадрона немцы выпустили 80 снарядов.

I emptied about 100 buckets of water out of my dugout. The Germans have fired 80 shells throughout the squadron’s zone.

Сегодня я сменил 5-ый эскадрон Каргопольских драгун и сел в окопы. Участок открытый, днем нельзя высунуть носа. Генерал Скоропадский принимает 1-ую Гвардейскую кавалерийскую дивизию. Жаль, что он уходит, он любил наш полк и хорошо относился ко мне.

Today I relieved the 5th Kargopol Dragoon Squadron and positioned myself in the trenches. The zone is wide open; during the day one cannot even poke one’s nose outside. General Skoropadsky is taking over the 1st Guards Cavalry Division. It is a pity that he is leaving; he loved our regiment and got along well with me.

Ездил встречать Пасху в штаб полка, где заутреню служил наш батюшка Ершов, и где собрались все офицеры полка. Приехал и генерал Скоропадский. Вернулся к себе в эскадрон в 4 часа утра, а многие лишь в 1 час дня. В 6 часов вечера перехристовывался со всеми гусарами эскадрона и лег спать.

I went to celebrate Easter at the regiment headquarters, where our Father Ershov said Matins, and where all the regiment officers gathered. General Skoropadsky also came. I returned to the squadron at 4 o’clock in the morning, and many only returned at 1 o’clock in the afternoon. At 6 o’clock in the evening all the Hussars and I kissed each other three times on the cheek, said “Christ has Risen, He is risen indeed!,” and went to sleep.

Вчера нас сменили Литовские уланы. Мы в резерве, и меня отпустили в отпуск.

Yesterday we were replaced by Lithuanian Ulans. We are in reserve and they allowed me to take a leave.
