President of the Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youths Richard R. Wright composed this short monograph that begins with the clandestine institutions of learning that existed before the war, sketches the growth of schools under the Freedmen’s Bureau during Reconstruction, and analyses their successes and failures over the decades from the perspective of the Nadir. He also includes institutions of higher learning such as Atlanta University, the emergence of a public school system and discussions of the goals of black education at the turn of the century.
