Digital Writing and the New Opportunities It Offers.

Digital writing has become increasingly important in the last decades. But, what exactly is digital writing? When we talk about digital writing, “we are referring to a transformed composing environment — that is, to writing produced on handheld and desktop digital devices and distributed primarily via wireless and wired networks.”[1] We have moved to a “very late age of print, well into a world of writing and document distribution that primarily happens digitally.”[2] This new way of distribution gives place to many new elements that enhance the way we communicate, the way we experience reality and how we approach tasks. Multimedia and information have developed at a high rate allowing us to include videos, interactive images, music, among others, which intertwine with text to give writing a new color and characteristics. In fact, the concept of multimodality is becoming more and more common when it comes to digital writing.

Digital Writing: Connection and the Formation of Writer’s Identities

Digital writing created opportunities only possible in the digital age. How writers think about audience, process, voice, and scope changed drastically with the introduction of new digital mediums, such as Twitter, WordPress, Facebook, and Tumblr. Many people  reading this probably cannot remember a time when these platforms did not exist (myself included). With all of the changes that digital environments have created and are creating for writers, the impact of these changes are heavily contested. Some critics argue that digital writers tend to publish casual and underdeveloped ideas, but others view their pursuit as constructive and positive. Proponents of digital writing argue that it allows writers to expand their ideas and explore possibilities that go beyond those of traditional writing, such as: connectivity, feedback, and development of authorial identity.

Developing Digital Environments: Adapt or Get Left Behind

The world of technology and digital communication is developing rapidly. We have moved from telegraph to email, home phone lines to wireless communication, and floppy-disks to digital platforms where we can access virtually any information we want at any given moment in time. Laptops, iPhones, televisions, and iPads have become such a large part of our daily lives that I find it challenging to imagine a would without technology and development.

School is Fun?

Everyday we sit through class after class with the same look on our face—one that says, “I stayed up way too late watching Netflix, and I’d rather be sleeping.”   We constantly think, “How will this class really impact my life?” Basically, what’s the point? How can we change this mind-set about going to classes that may not interest us as students and begin to see the potential value in them? How do we make class exciting? Okay, maybe that’s a long shot, but how do we at least make classrooms a place where students lose that zombie look on their face, and act interested in what’s taking place? And here’s a thought—maybe even become passionate about what they are learning and decide to integrate it into their lives moving forward. The answer, you ask? Digital Writing.

Technological Literacy Changes: Communication, Learning, and Teaching

“Multimedia and the internet enable learners to find a voice for themselves at the intersection of multiple time scales, to represent their own version of reality through multimodal texts, and to confront a broad public audience with that reality.”

Technological Literacy Changes: Communication, Learning and Teaching

In the digital era, the way in which we communicate and learn has flourished and evolved. We are witnessing new devices and “cyber communities” in the social networks that allow interface users to communicate and share information from any part of the world. As a consequence of this process, digital media has acquired an important role in today`s society since it is socially expected to have technological literacy. The International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) defines technological literacy asone’s ability to use, manage, evaluate, and understand technology”. This technological literacy implies the ability to communicate, access, manage, evaluate and share information, and to write for targeted audiences. In this context, digital writing has become a key element to enhance technological literacy in today`s world, which has changed the way we manage, learn, and teach technological skills.

Transformation: Nomadic to Tech Savvy Society

Imagine waking up in the morning, drinking a warm cup of coffee, going to school or work, returning home to enjoy dinner and relax before getting into bed. While this routine may appear relatively standard, it is missing one important factor of a typical day. One of the most significant parts of our daily living was not included – technology. We cannot escape technology; we are engulfed by technology with the use of laptops, iPhones, iPods, and televisions. Over the last decade, profound advancements have been achieved with technology, ultimately changing the way society functions as a whole. It is almost impossible to imagine people using typewriters and sending handwritten cards. We have become accustomed to living in a fast-paced world with continual communication and immediate responses. Our world is a fluid place that is consistently endeavoring to become more advanced. Consequently, it is critical that we as students and future employees are well-equipped with state-of-the art tools. Many schools have taken note of this technological change in society. Classrooms have begun shifting away from the traditional style toward a digital learning style. Naturally, there are people who criticize the use of technology in the academic environment. They believe that technology is distracting and that digital writing is not “real writing” (Hawley). Although it is important to consider both sides of the argument, I strongly believe that using technology helps develop a more engaged student as well as an individual who is better prepared for the real world.

Run & Be Free

Maybe it was the small iced coffee or maybe I was just overexcited that my dad came to visit me but, whatever it was, I’ll take it and hail to thee! Today I ran a fabulous 10 miles at a 8’02” pace around my favorite place in the entire world, Bald Head Island, North Carolina.…

Don’t Mess with (the State Fair of) Texas

The Reunion

In March of 2014, my parents sat on the tube making their way from their hotel in London to my Grandmother’s flat in Essex. Neither of them wanted to convey their nervousness to each other. My mom jokingly said to my dad, “wouldn’t it be cute if someone was there waiting for us at the station?” Well, as they exited the station, they were greeted by a man waving his arms yelling “Christopher!” Nora, one of my dad’s half sisters, had sent her husband to bring my parents from the train to ‘Nana’s’ house.

When they arrived at the flat, things were a bit awkward at first. But after sitting down and chatting with his brother Nick, my dad told my mom he felt like he had known him his whole life, they just clicked. When the immediate family had all arrived, my dad was asked to share his side of the story. Once he had finished, there was not a dry eye in the room. They went on to spend most of the day comparing upbringings, life stories and memories in order to get to know each other.

The rest of the trip was filled with celebration, an impromptu family reunion was held at Aunt Kath’s house, according to my dad, the pints were flowing freely and everyone was filled with joy. The initial uneasy feeling and question of “how will this play out?” had totally left everyone’s minds.

One of the first things ‘Nana’ had said to my parents upon their arrival was, “I’m sorry I’ve been sucha bitch to ya!” in her Irish brogue, apologizing for the nearly 10 years she knew my dad was hoping to connect with her, but she was too afraid to tell her family. This was not easier for my dad or for his mom. In a more private moment, she pulled my dad aside to confide in him that there was never a day that passed where he was not on her mind. For my dad, hearing this really made him feel that his search and years of waiting was well worth.

Since this trip, my dad has been back for another visit and he speaks to his mom on the phone three times a week.
