Will Carlisle’s Rich History Withstand the 21st Century?

A 2004 Washington Post article [citation below] highlights Carlisle’s 250 year history. Carlisle has seen successful Farmers Markets, Civil War generals, and prison breaks. Plenty of historical figures have graced the town, including British Major John Andre, Bessie Jones, Molly Pitcher, and Ben Franklin. This quaint town has more history than meets the eye. The author closes with, “Having weathered war and other winds of change, Carlisle’s our bet to withstand the assaults of the new century.”

How has Carlisle responded to the introduction of Wal-Mart and other large retail stores?

Christine H. O’Toole. “A Town With Mettle; From a bronze Molly Pitcher to iron cannonball scars, Carlisle, Pa., is heavy on the history :[FINAL Edition]. ” The Washington Post [Washington, D.C.] 14 Jul 2004,C02. ProQuest Newsstand. ProQuest. Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA. 23 Sep. 2007

Carlisle origin of Giant

giant.jpgThe supermarket chain GIANT began in 1923 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania with a small butcher shop known as the Carlisle Meat Market. In 1936, David Javitch, one of the two men who worked in the butcher shop, bought a store in Lewistown, PA and named it GIANT Shopping Food Center. An innovative business for its era, GIANT stocked perishable and dry goods products in the same market. By 1968, the 9th location of GIANT Shopping Food Center had opened in Harrisburg, PA. After 83 years of business, GIANT’s Distribution Center sill operates out of its Carlisle hometown.

Union Fire Company No. 1

While researching the Carlisle Fire Department, I found the website for Union Fire Company No. 1. The fire department was established in 1789 and the building was built in 1888. Not only is it a working volunteer fire department, but the building is also a museum.
The following link will take you to the fire department’s museum web page where you can find pictures of historical fires and the items in the museum.

American Dream

According to the

The Borough of Carlisle:

“Strolling through historic downtown, one is greeted by unique architecture, quaint shops, and overall SERENITY.

With a reputation as a growing and viable community, historic Carlisle CONTINUES TO MEET THE EVER-EVOLVING ECONOMIC NEEDS OF ITS CITIZENS.

Civic pride appears throughout Carlisle’s well-maintained community.  Restored homes, manicured lawns, and flower boxes reflect the pride of homeownership where peoples of ALL economic backgrounds have achieved the “AMERICAN DREAM” through AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND HIGH EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS.  Citizens continually volunteer and support local programs involving the elderly, youth and disenfranchised revealing the MORAL FIBER of this great town.

Carlisle’s cultural environment is a diverse mix”

Do you as a community agree or disagree with these statements? Is Carlisle truly this idyllic place referenced to by the Borough, or is there more to Carlisle than meets the eye?

Living History

house.jpgI found an amazing article about various historical moments in Carlisle, PA from the Washington Post called “A Town with Mettle”. This article was written by Christine H.O’Toole she does a great job creating a visual historic representation of Carlisle History. One thing that I found very interesting was the 200-year- old bed-and-breakfast that is still open today! It’s located over on Hanover past the Comfort Suites. In the article the women that owns the bed-and-breakfast talks about how the ghost of Jessie Ewing, a former owner, still resides in her bed room. This article is also very interesting because it states that Ben Franklin stayed in what became Mandy’s coffeehouse (formerly on the Square) in 1753 when he was trying to negotiate a treaty with Indians of six different Nations. HOW COOL IS ALL OF THIS!!! Please check out these two different articles and let me know what you think.
