Kiwi Magazine, in its latest issue, highlighted a few green selling points of each campus on the list, which comprises small to large universities and community colleges to Ivy League schools.
Dickinson was recognized for its 50 percent wind-powered campus, which features a biodiesel plant, four Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED-certified buildings, and a transitional organic farm.
“We’re very pleased to receive the recognition for the work we are doing,” said Neil Leary, director of the college’s new Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education.
The center, funded by a $1.4 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is a key element in the college’s initiative to make study of the environment and sustainability a distinguishing feature of a Dickinson education.
“Students are definitely attracted to Dickinson because it has a good reputation for strong environmental science and environmental studies majors,” Leary said, noting how it’s one of the few institutions of higher learning with a department for environmental science.
