The Dickinson College Farm student workers, apprentices, staff and friends have once again swept the field at the Anything that Floats competition just down the road at Children’s Lake in Boiling Springs, PA! The Farm team constructed two boats for the big competition on July 4th – the Panda Express and Red, White & Moo. The team drafted ideas on July 2nd, constructed the vessels on July 3rd, and raced for the win on July 4th, not even knowing if they could float until entering the lake the day of competition! Both boats were constructed from scrap materials found on the College Farm. There were 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10-person boat races that were won by the Panda Express vessel, with Red, White & Moo coming in 2nd or 3rd place in the same categories. The Farm also captured the ‘Most Enthusiastic’ trophy, likely due to Matt’s trombone playing mid-competition with Pepe onboard the Red, White & Moo vessel! The Farm team also had 5 participants in the tube race that kicked off the morning. Following the fun and fanfare at Anything that Floats, the Farm team went back for a cookout at the College Farm. We enjoyed grass-fed beef, pierogies, pasta salad, watermelon, organic farm-fresh veggies, and many desserts! It was a festive, competitive, and all-around awesome 4th of July holiday for the team. Check out the boat construction details below, along with a PennLive article about the event.
