Kelsey Horowitz graduated from Dickinson in 2018 with an Environmental Studies degree. She didn’t work at the farm until after graduation, Kelsey was a first-year apprentice immediately following graduation and went on to become the second-year apprentice. She always wanted to work on the farm when she was a student but she didn’t have time as Kelsey was a three-season varsity athlete (cross country, indoor track and outdoor track).

After leaving DCF, Kelsey went on to work at a nearby vegetable farm for one season and the next season she worked at Roots Cut Flower Farm in Carlisle. After that, Kelsey worked at REI for a while. Most recently, she was working at Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative, which is an Amish farmer owned co-op that is a large wholesale organic vegetable distributor and CSA program across the mid-Atlantic.

Now, Kelsey is back at the Dickinson College Farm as the Crew Leader! She is so excited to be back, was always hoping to find a way to come back to the farm. We as the farm are happy to have her back as well!

There are many fields related to agriculture (whether they are in agriculture or not). She found herself using skills she learned at the farm to help her relate to customers at REI, whether it was talking about how good gear does make a difference (hello harvesting in the rain!), as well as learning to ask important questions to understand why something might happen, which she used a lot working with farmers at LFFC. On a different note, she’s made very good friends that she still keep in touch with five years later. Kelsey’s ultimate career goals and next steps are unknown at this time. Since she just started back up at DCF, and is hoping to stick around for a while to really understand all the aspects it takes to run a successful farm and crew. After her crew leader position comes to an end she will re-evaluate to figure out where she would like to go next!

A little fun facts about Kelsey, she has a cat named Molly Pitcher who once was a feral street cat in Carlisle, named after the infamous Molly Pitcher of Carlisle. She likes to run for fun, exercise and focuses on mental health! Kelsey also downhill skis in the winter, kayak and tubes in the summer. She likes to knit and is learning to embroider! She also LOVES ice cream.
One of her favorite DCF memories is the annual garlic harvest. It was always so fun, there is a lot of garlic and the entire crew gets to work together to get this huge task done in one day.

Thank you Kelsey for sharing this with us all, we are so excited to have you apart of our team!! Welcome aboard!
