3-я кавалерийская дивизия перешла реку Варту в брод у деревни Бродня. Сидя на высоком берегу и смотря в сторону противника, я не заметил ни одного немецкого солдата. Может быть, они ушли рано утром без боя? В то же время начальник штаба дивизии диктовал, а я записывал для передачи в нашу дивизию, донесение в штаб корпуса: “Сбив передовые части противника, 3-я кавалерийская дивизия форсировала реку Варту”. Записав это, я прибавил от себя: “Мной противник замечен не был”, дабы наша дивизия знала обстановку действительную, а не фантастическую. Почему бы не донести: “противник ушел без сопротивления на запад, мы переходим на другой берег Варты”. Узнал, что наша дивизия, которая шла южнее, заняла город Варту. Еще южнее двигалась 14-ая кавалерийская дивизия.

Холодно, но на полях еще цветут лютики, васильки и анютины глазки. Странная здесь зима. Остановились в минном управлении в селе, что на другом берегу. Старшина очень любезен и угощает нас на славу.

The 3rd Cavalry Division forded the Warta River near the village Brodnya. Sitting on the high shore of the river and looking towards the enemy, I did not notice a single German soldier. Maybe they left early in the morning without a fight? At the same time, the chief of division headquarters dictated a report to me, which I prepared for transmission to our division: “Having taken down the advanced part of the enemy, the 3rd Cavalry Division forged the Warta River.”  After recording this, I added, “Our enemy was not spotted by me,” so that our division would know the real situation, and not some fantasy. Why not just say, “The enemy left to the west without conflict and so we are moving on along the other shore of the Warta.” I learned that our division, which was heading further south, took over the town of Warta. The 14th Cavalry Division moved even further south.

It is cold, but buttercups, blue cornflowers, and pansies blossom in the fields. Winter is strange here. We stopped at the Mining Survey in the village, located on the other bank. The Sergeant is a very accommodating host and is treating us very well.
