The Start of the Łódź Operation.

The Village of Vygoda.

This morning our 2nd Squadron went on a scouting mission, having received the route. We didn’t get far before meeting a wide line of enemy border patrols. Twice I ran into German lancers but they left without a fight, and one member of their patrol left behind a rather nice horse. My platoon was at the head of the middle patrol group, and so as to not get separated from the core of the squadron we stopped at Lord Makulits’ manner, where the lady of the estate treated me and my hussars, as well as our horses, to generous food and drink. We were the first Russians to arrive there since the war began. There was also a wounded German soldier who had been abandoned there, but I had little desire to get mixed up with a prisoner, who would have only slowed down the advance of our patrol, and so I left him in the custody of the lady. At night we headed south towards the squadron, which had spend the night away from the main roads in the village of Vygoda. Something is wrong with my stomach, and by evening I was in real pain. How silly that today I was fed like a master, and then I suddenly fell ill.
