Village of Chatolin.

A young Duke of Leuchtenberg spent the night with us in our squadron location. A billeting officer passed on a “hello” to me from a “Cossack officer,” but I didn’t go to find out who it was. In the morning I found out it was the Duke of Leuchtenberg. I knew him when he was just a junker. He is my brother’s friend from military school, a very nice and modest young man.

We settled in on a guarding mission. My outpost was in a house on the edge of the village that stretched for several versts. Only a sick old man was living there and we gave him food. At night his wife arrived and discovered that one of two turkeys had disappeared from under the old man’s bed. She started blaming the hussars, but the old man said, “Shame on you. What if our Yas’ got hungry and took a turkey from somewhere? There’s a war going on, after all.” He turned out to be an old soldier. I paid him for his bird.
