Наш эскадрон вышел из окопов. В этот день шрапнелью в голову ранен гусар Огинский, но он остался в строю. 29 марта все свободные офицеры дивизии ездили к саперам смотреть устройство дымовой завесы. Это было очень интересно, когда 3-дюймовый снаряд, брошенный рукой, давал много дыма в течение 15 минут. А несколько таких снарядов давали завесу, через которую уже ничего не было видно.

Наш эскадрон стоит среди болот, и я стреляю из пистолета щук, уже убил 5 штук. Офицеры занимают новый дом, в котором нас 5 офицеров в одной половине, а в другой – лошади и вестовые. Заведует нашим довольствием штаб-ротмистр Топорков.

Сегодня в 3 часа дня была демонстрация новых ручных гранат. Сам учитель, уверявший, что они безопасны, был ранен в руку. Рана легкая, но надо сделать операцию, чтобы вытащить жестянку.

Our squadron left the trenches. On this day, hussar Oginsky was wounded in the head by shrapnel, but he stayed in formation. On the 29th of March, every available officer in the division went to the sappers to see the device for setting up a smoke screen. It was incredibly interesting to see how a 3-inch smoke canisters, thrown by hand, released a lot of smoke over the course of fifteen minutes. With several of such canisters you could create a screen that was impossible to see through.

Our squadron is standing in the middle of a bog. I am shooting my pistol at pike and have already shot five of them. The officers are occupying a new house, with five of us in one half and horses and messengers in the other. First Lieutenant Toporkov is in charge of our rations.

Today at three o’clock in the afternoon there was a demonstration of the new hand grenades. The instructor himself, who assured us that they were safe, was wounded in the hand. It was only a slight wound, but required an operation in order to remove a piece of tin.
