Сегодня новый командир полка полковник Коленкин, бывший кирасир Его Величества, делал осмотр. Была выводка лошадей, осмотр оружия. Он большой знаток стрельбы и любит оружие. Интересно, что он окончил Горный Институт, Археологические курсы, Военно-Юридическую академию, артиллерийскую и пулеметную школы. Мне он нравится, положительно милый человек, и другие его хвалят. Вот и хорошо, приятно, когда командир нравится подчиненным. Он пил у нас чай. Много ужасного я услыхал про шпионаж Мясоедова и других. Говорят, что это еще ничто, есть люди и повыше их. Один умирающий немецкий офицер якобы говорил: «По долгу присяги я не могу сказать многого, но до тех пор, пока не уберут одного человека, занимающего очень высокий пост в командном составе, вы будет терпеть поражение». Германия сильна шпионажем. Не будь этого, может быть война была бы уже закончена и не в пользу немцев.

Today the new regiment commander, Colonel Kolenkin, former cuirassier of His Majesty, made an inspection. The horses were exercized and the weapons inspected. He is an expert shot and loves weapons. Interestingly enough, he graduated from the Mining Institute, from the courses of Archeology, the War-Science Academy, and artillery and machine gun schools. I really like him, he’s a positively wonderful person, and others praise him. It is good, very nice, when subordinates like their  commander. He had tea with us. I heard many horrible things about the espionage of Myasoedov and others. They say that this is nothing and that there are people higher than them. One dying German officer supposedly said: “I cannot say much because of my oath of duty, but until one person who occupies a very high position in command is removed, you will be defeated.” Germany has a strong espionage program. If it weren’t for this, maybe the war would already be over—and not in favor of the Germans.
