Ездил осматривать квартиры ближе к станции Зегевольд. Оказалось, что в указанном месте на всех квартир не хватает. Очень жаль, ближе к станции жить и удобней, и интересней. Неужели опять простоим всю зиму. Занятия могут и осточертеть.

I went to inspect the lodgings closer to Zegevold Station. It turns out that there are not enough lodgings for everyone at the appointed place. It is very regrettable; it is both more convenient and more interesting to live closer to the station. Is it possible that we will be idle all winter again? The exercises can really get tiresome.

Наш фронт тих и спокоен. Бои идут во Франции, в Румынии и на южном фронте.

Our front is quiet and peaceful. Battles are taking place in France, in Romania, and on the southern front.

Эскадрон стоит по хуторам. Утром вода на лужах замерзшая, днем шел снег, град и дождь. Сегодня прекратилось общее довольствие офицеров эскадрона, так как все живут по отдельности. Я живу один. Довольствие стоило 60 рублей: 2 блюда в будни и 3 – в праздники.

The squadron is stationed at farmsteads. The water was frozen in puddles this morning and snow, hail, and ice fell this afternoon. Today the squadron officers stopped receiving a common allowance, since we are all living separately. I am living alone. My allowance was worth 60 rubles: 2 meals on weekdays and 3 on feast days.

Одному жить скучно. Так как Барнов 3 октября пойдет в отпуск, я хочу до этого проветриться. Сегодня я прибыл в Петроград. Брат мой Георгий, может быть, скоро вернется из плена.

Living alone is tedious. Since Barnov is going on leave on October 3rd, I want to have a change of scene before then. Today I arrived in Petrograd. My brother Georgy will, perhaps, return from his captivity soon.

В полдень был уже в эскадроне.

I was already at the squadron by noon.

Командующий дивизией генерал Нилов делал смотр полку, была выводка лошадей, осмотр оружия и снаряжения. Снова говорят, что мы пойдем в Румынию.

The division commander General Nilov did an inspection of the regiment today; there were inspections of the horses, weapons, and equipment. We are again being told that we will go to Romania.
