Our ruble is falling dramatically. I found out that Cornet Podolsky from our Hussar regiment shot himself. I saw him on the 29th of March. He was a nice boy. He was transferred to us from the Dagestan horse regiment into the 5th squadron to Shakhnazarov, who “looked into the future” him and placed him with the cavalry sergeant major. The vain young man ended his life. How could an officer such as Shakh be kept in the service?
Сегодня ездил в штаб нашего “конного” гусарского полка в Новый Беверсгоф. Как раз был смотр полка новым начальником дивизии. Обедал я в штабе. Меня встретили радушно и было так хорошо на сердце. Особенно меня растрогал полковник Скуратов. Он сказал на прощание: “я хочу высказать тебе свое восхищение за твое отношение к службе в Стрелковом полку. Помни, что полк тебя не забудет и очередной конный эскадрон за тобой”. Я ответил, что меня сильно поддержал Владимир Васильевич Доможиров, мой бывший командир эскадрона, который написал мне дивное письмо, когда я был назначен в стрелки.
Today I went to the headquarters of our “cavalry” Hussar regiment in New Bevershof. And in fact, the new division commander was conducting a review of the regiment. I had lunch at headquarters. Позавчера я выехал из Пскова, а вчера приехал а полк. Пополнение из тыла еще не пришло. Ездивший туда делегат от полка ротмистр Ломиковский сказал, что может быть, пополнение прибудет 2 мая, то есть с опозданием на 2 месяца.
The day before yesterday I left Pskov, and yesterday I arrived at the regiment. The reinforcements from the rear have not yet arrived. The regiment’s delegate, Captain Lomikovsky, who went there, said that the re-supply may reach us on May 2, which is two months late.

Был в Думе. Сперва слушал речи различных ораторов: Зиновьева (большевик), Филоненко и других. Говорил также поручик Кузьмин, помощник Командующего войсками Петроградского военного округа и товарищ военного министра полковник Якубович. Эти двое определенно за наступление. Когда я прочел с трибуны “декларацию”, то поднялся такой гам и свист, что я предпочел “благородно ретироваться”.

I was in the Duma. First, I listened to the speeches of various speakers: Zinoviev (a Bolshevik), Filonenko, and others. Lieutenant Kuzmin, Assistant Commander of the troops of the Petrograd Military District, and Colonel Yakubovich, Comrade War Minister, also spoke. These two were definitely in favor of the offensive. I’ve only just returned today. I was delayed because of a spy, who turned out to be a German who spoke good Russian. The Provisional Government, having discharged the emigrants, had among them a large percentage of German spies with fake documents. Then I was delayed because of my brother. He is still mad, and I asked to enlist him in the reserve so that he might take off his regimental uniform. I sent him to Vladivostok with a Hussar-steward, as it was impossible to give him any money directly.

А сегодня в первый раз эскадрон запротестовал выходить на учение. С 2 ручными гранатами и парабеллумом в руке я вышел к людям, но, Слава Богу, удалось уговорить их заниматься.
There is anarchy in Kronstadt. Yesterday I conducted a walk-maneuver with the squadron. We walked more than 20 versts to the Hussar regiment headquarters, and we returned by narrow gauge railway. The Hussars were surprised by such a “long incursion”. And today, for the first time, the squadron protested going out for a drill. I went out to the men with two hand grenades and a Parabellum in my hand but thank God I managed to persuade them to practice.
