Still in Rembowo

I must report on the activities of the Vyshgorod company – once a day. Usually I copy the order and then note in my own words what I have seen and heard. Then I use the field phone to make a call to the first unit to find out what’s going on there and then ask to be connected to their neighbor. Usually my reconnaissance comes to an end when I receive the answer: “How on earth can we connect them when the wires are down?” Once I’ve recorded everything, I send my report to division headquarters with one of the hussars, and with that I am done.

Today the weather is absolutely spring-like, and therefore the mud in the village is awful. Around 4 o’clock in the afternoon an order was received for Colonel Kuznetsov, the commander of the 5th Kaluga Infantry Regiment, to go to the city of Płock with two battalions. The Germans are mounting an offensive along the right bank of the Vistula. A border defense regiment under the command of Colonel Shelomnitsky was stationed in Płock, but already left moving east. Kuznetsov should remain to provide support to him, and,in the case of a strong enemy onslaught, should withdraw towards Vyshgorod, where sappers have already set up a position along the line of the Arvanovo, Artsishevo, and Dasotsin villages. It is a pity that the Kalugans are leaving: they have such a wonderful cook. While dining with them, I ate as if I was in the finest restaurant. Today we had wonderful blinis and meringues.
