Veltereden.

January 1st. I returned from Buitenzorg,[1]– where I traveled to celebrate the New Year. I can’t complain about last year, but who knows what the new one will bring? Sad things happened last year: mom’s sickness and Lela Sterligova’s death.

January 12th. The newspapers say that Germany and France are ready to recognize the Bolsheviks. Lenin is headed to Washington for a conference. Russia’s “friends” don’t want to allow her to recover. The Bolsheviks declared that emigrants’ citizenship has been revoked. I would like to live in Russia among my own people. Here the Dutch language hangs over my head, but how can I learn it without a Dutch-Russian dictionary? I long for a woman. For a good Russian woman.

January 15th. I need to leave this week. It’s time, as money goes awfully fast here. I make little money, less than in the mountains. I need to begin saving up for travel. I have no time, I waste it all on the useless Dutch language, and even more of it on acquaintances. I long for Russians.

Merapi Volcano.

January 23rd. Yogyakarta. Today we again set off on a short expedition, I believe for two weeks, to the Merapi and Galunggung volcanoes. My lower back aches—I think I’ve had a chill for some time now. Ivan, too, feels unwell and is resting. On the train today I was reading a novel in Dutch and made it through over 100 pages. It’s too bad I don’t have a dictionary, although there was much I did understand.

January 24-25th. Maron (Observational Post on Merapi). I’m here for the 6th time. Ivan barely got here, though I feel better. I went to scout out the mountain rivers. Marvelous sites. And it is so much better here than in Batavia. In the evening I admired the volcanoes. Merbabu was covered by a hat—clouds with such marvelous edges that, if drawn, would not be believed. During the day I was at the local elder’s and ate a provincial lunch. It was great—a plentitude of fruit, chicken, fresh herbs, and of course rice. I slept excellently.

January 25th. The Village of Selo. I walked no less than 25 km, crawled around by the mountain streams, got wet, and did not reach the village until 7 in the evening. My feet are chafed, but I’m not very tired, surprisingly. It’s nice here. The head of the hotel has obviously fallen a bit in love with me and charged 8 guilders instead of 10.

January 29-30th. Bojolali. I’m tired like never before. I scouted rivers for 25 kilometers. Bojolali is a tiny, but old city. It has a fortress. The next day I rested my sore feet. A new acquaintance of mine from the hotel, Count von Ranzov, invited me for a ride to Salatiga. It’s on the northern side of Merbabu. We went to the cinema and dined at the home of the boss of the local topographic service, who made me an offer to join, offering wages in the amount of 520 guilders, or a total of 700 guilders with expenses. I said that if my boss leaves for Holland, I’ll move. Fate favors those who wander.

Galunggung Volcano (2060 m).

Tasikmalaya: a wonderful little town. Today we started off in an automobile, then we arrived on foot to old volcanic crater, which was erupting lava just four years ago. It’s a very beautiful place. On the 8th of October, 1822, there was a very terrible eruption when over 4000 people perished; then in 1842; and finally in 1917 this is where the “crab” appeared: a hill of lava rose up from the middle of the lake, which is still smoking to this day. At the foot of the volcano there are many hot springs, and the natives come here for treatment.

Today we walked on the bottom of the huge half-opened crater. The western wall of the crater is 500 m. high and is awfully steep, but it’s already overgrown. There is a very beautiful waterfall here, and a mountain river. I swam in the lake. By evening it began to rain. I’m trying not to get wet, since my tent is only made of one layer. The next day I looked for the place where there were hot springs in the channels of mountain streams. It’s sad, this is the first time I have a gun but there’s nothing around to see besides squirrels.

Tasikmalaya.

I am stuck in town, in an uncertain situation. According to instructions, I must go to Batavia. But in addition to this I have another incomprehensible new instruction, that I must go to Merapi and continue my itinerary. Dr. Kemmerling is now in Bandung; I’ll try to call him on the telephone.

How I long for the Motherland. So it always goes: a man dreams of that which he doesn’t have, desires that which he had but lost…

Merapi Volcano.

February 7-23rd. I received a message from Dr. Kemmerling, that I must go to Merapi. I don’t understand why. I came here in the rain. I already consider myself, in spirit, to be “at home,” how much I’ve gotten used to this place, how much I’ve come to know it. The elevation here is 1000 m.; the temperature is a wonderful +18 degrees.

I was writing my report. I received a money transfer. It’s nice, since I didn’t have any left, just like last year.

On Friday, February 10th, I found two Russians: former musicians from the Fedorov opera, who live in the Louise Villa, not far from the Muntilan. They grow local potatoes. At first it was difficult for them, since newspapers began to write that there were two Russians in the village engaged in Bolshevik propaganda.

In the evening, some Javanese came to the post with music and 3 female dancers. Here they dance mostly with their arms and fingers; it’s rather unique. We made merry until 12 o’clock at night.

Then I sat at home, since my foot was hurting, and it swelled around the heel in that old chafing place. I have no instruction, and I don’t know what else to do. I felt sad. I want to go to Sumatra soon. I’d even go to New Guinea.

I’m sitting around, drawing, studying Dutch, admiring the marvelous mountains. I have discovered in myself a big flaw here. I like to work fast, but here everything is done slowly. Today my mandri pointed this out about me. I must rid myself of that “Russian” habit …

I received news from Dr. Kemmerling: I am to stay here the entire month.

February 18th. I went to the volcano. Since last night the volcano has been restless and has been spewing rocks. In the morning it was covered by clouds. Even back on the road, I heard loud bangs at the summit. At 10 am, my coolie and I took a camera to the place where the rocks had rolled down to. I sat for 40 minutes: nothing was visible. I had just begun to descend when the bangs sounded again. It was 10:45. I had already descended to the bottom of a deep ravine at the Blonkeng River. The coolie looked back and cried out, “The gas is already close. We need to run.” Indeed, black clouds of gas were approaching, rolling down from the volcano. For five minutes we ran along the stream. I stopped and began to take snapshots, to the horror of the coolie. We arrived at the post. My Ivan [my assistant] was awfully worried about me. He had a temperature of 40 degrees, and he was ready to run out to look for me.

Today one cannot see the top clearly, but the lava stopped not far from the place where we had previously been. One can see that the greenery is covered in ash. It’s interesting that the volcano was somewhat active on the 18th of December, the 18th of January, and now on the 18th of February. The next day I went exploring. The volcano spat out rocks and ash, which  buried the bottom of the Senova River. Boulders with a diameter up to 2.5 meters were hot. The limbs of trees bowed under the weight of the ash. The ash was 15 cm deep and up to 100 degrees.

February 24th-25th. Selo Village. We left Maron at 8 am and arrived here at 5 pm (we took a break for 1.5 hours). The weather is nice. We went to the volcano but there was a fog, and nothing was visible. This edge of the mountain experienced an ashfall up to an altitude of 1700 m. We sent for a tent, in order to spend the night in the crater. I’m not sure it’ll be successful, since the weather is rainy. I am unwell.

March 1st. Klaten. Took an automobile, through Bojolali and Solo (Surakarta), to here. In Solo we stopped at the hospital, at the nurses’, and were stunned: such a quaint institution with kind nurses. Klaten is a nice little town with a redoubt (an old fortress). Overall, anywhere is better than Batavia. At night there was a dreadful hurricane.

March 3-6th. Maron. I returned here via Djordjia. Ivan and I are alone. I received notice that there the plague is near, in the village. This is a really bad place, in Muntilan, Bojolali, and Magelang, up to 1000 people a month have gotten sick, and there are incidents with Europeans. I’ve calculated that if I stay here until the 1st of April, then I’ll have 550 guilders in savings, though this will apparently remain a dream. As of now I have 100 guilders.

I received a telegram to go explore the place where there was a flood of the Opok river. It means that I’ll have to go to Djordjia, so all my plans are unravelling. In hotels you can’t cut down very much on your expenses.

March 6th. Around 2 o’clock there was another “landgir” (lahar), i.e, streams of water coming down the volcano sweeping through the gorge of the Blongkeng river.

March 7th. Djordjia. Hotel Mataran. A letter came from Dr. Kemmerling with a check for 332 guilders and a notification of a money transfer for 700 guilders for travel. This means I won’t be going to Batavia any time soon.

March 8th. Pondok. Today I went to investigate the causes of the flood. On the night of February 28th, the water overflowed the banks and rose to a height of 1.5 meters. I stopped by Mr. Husman’s, the proprietor of the sugar plantation. He’s been here for 18 years and still dreams of visiting his homeland.

March 9th. Djordjia. I returned here and met a young, charming German from Batavia named Stern (a former artillery man, wounded). He’s to go with me to Merapi, and I’m to show him everything.

March 10-23rd. Maron. I finally received a registered letter from General Miller’s wife in Paris. She wrote that my poem was forwarded to the Grand Duke himself in the South of France. This pleases me greatly, since now I know for sure that the Grand Duke is alive.

I went to explore the Senova River. The boulders are still hot, like an oven. What an intense source of energy: it has been 21 days since the eruption.

I drew old volcanoes for a book with illustrations.

The Bolsheviks want to take Khabarovsk. That means Vladivostok will fall as well. When will this all end! For five years the Russian lands have been ruled by bandits. What else are they to be called?  In one month they kill more people than all the tsars for the past 300 years. Maybe I’m already fed up with Maron, with its daily rain and fog. If I had any money, I’d go to Europe.

I set up a chin-up bar.

March 25th. Djordjia. I received a telegram stating that I can go back. If I could stay to the end of the month, I would have 500 guilders, but now I won’t even have 400.

Weltevreden (Present day southern half of the village Pasar Baru)

I was already with Russians. Vasilich is glad. There is little new here. I became acquainted with a girl, Piotrovskaya, and her brother; she’s 17 and he’s 13. Their mother is dying; their father is in the Philippines. I feel bad: the young lady is very sweet, but without a maternal figure to look after her it will be very, very difficult, there is so much temptation here. I saw some new Russians: at church, at the restaurant.

Again, I’m travelling. Again, I must scout Merapi and return to Galungung. I feel bad leaving the lonely Vasilich. Merapi has been raising hell in my absence; there was a violent eruption, and I already received a telegram from Dr. Kemmerling.

Merapi Volcano.

April 7th-8th. Maron. I got here in the rain. Dr. Kemmerling is here too, he’s mad about something. An exploration of Batang river. Almost the same circumstances as on February 18th. Again there is a lot of ash, a fissure at the summit, etc.

Today Dr. Kemmerling spoke his mind: I am always ahead, with no respect for his position; my luggage arrived earlier and I have forgotten that I am only a watchman and he is the boss. Goodness, he really thinks, that I will take his boots off for him! I will always be a Russian colonel and nobleman. I can carry rocks, but not boots. It’s sad. If I had money I would leave, but my savings have dwindled; it’s time to save up again.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read Russian literature. It goes in spurts, and I mostly lived off newspapers. But just then The End of the Line by Artsybashev fell into my hands. Many truths.

April 9th. Bivouac at a height of 1750 m. I passed through the place that was destroyed on February 18th. Bivouacked on the tall edge of the ravine. The other side was a bit destroyed, but not this one. Damp, foggy. There’s melancholia in my heart. The doctor has become unrecognizable. He’s already finding flaws in me in relation to the hardship. It’s funny—me, who spent so many years camping! It’s to the point that I always worry about letters, and he said that while bivouacking I would not get a single one! Indeed, this is downright abuse. Oh well, our time will come. For now, have patience Cossack, for you will become a chief.

I caught a cold and I am sneezing nonstop.

April 12th-16th. Maron. The doctor left. I am alone and basking in solitude. Plant, a German, came. He brought a little gun. We were walking along the river and shooting. I haven’t forgotten how and can show off some of my old tricks.

April 18th. Selo Village. I climbed from Selo to the very top of Merapi (It’s my first time being so high on this side). It’s bad that it was very hot, and most importantly there was caustic smoke, so it was awful. I set off from the hotel at 5:45, was at the crater at 9:10, and at the summit at 9:45. I left the crater at 11 pm and was at the hotel at 2 pm.

April 19th-21st. Maron. I set off for here at 9 am, and at 4 pm I was here.

April 21st. I explored the second river. I walked 30 km during the day. The weather is nice.

Tasikmalaya.

Again, since morning, jotting along in a stuffy train. It is detestable to travel around India by train. As I’m sitting here, someone next to me is playing a Russian waltz. It seems to be a Dutch teacher. Again, that melancholic villain gnaws at my heart. How can it be that the years passed by, and you wander around, unneeded by anyone.  Foreign faces, a foreign language, a foreign country…I know that if I returned to Russia I would think often about the lavish nature here, which I currently find insufferable. Such is the law of nature.
