The 2nd anniversary of the glorious attack at Shadov’s. That was a good time. Doing some shopping for my squadron. I bought an icon of St. Vladimir and am thinking of organizing a celebration for the squadron.

Yesterday I went to the festivities at the girls’ gymnasium. I wore a dolman. I read a poem and caused a sensation.

The day before yesterday I left Pskov, and yesterday I arrived at the regiment. The reinforcements from the rear have not yet arrived. The regiment’s delegate, Captain Lomikovsky, who went there, said that the re-supply may reach us on May 2, which is two months late.

Late last night 1,050 men from Syzran arrived. Today they were divided into squadrons. From that day on we should consider the rifle regiment actually deployed, so I began a war log of the 11th Rifle Squadron.

This morning I’ve been working with the squadron and so far, I’m satisfied. Cornet de Bode isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but he is an honest, diligent, and efficient officer. Ensign Ushakov looks like a shrinking violet but is articulate and eager to fight.

The division has chosen me to be a “delegate” from the active army to the state Duma, where we must read our “Declaration” on the war to a victorious end.

Petrograd.

I was in the Duma. First, I listened to the speeches of various speakers: Zinoviev (a Bolshevik), Filonenko, and others. Lieutenant Kuzmin, Assistant Commander of the troops of the Petrograd Military District, and Colonel Yakubovich, Comrade War Minister, also spoke. These two were definitely in favor of the offensive. When I read the “Declaration” from the rostrum, there was such commotion and whistling that I preferred to “retreat with honor.”

I’ve only just returned today. I was delayed because of a spy, who turned out to be a German who spoke good Russian. The Provisional Government, having discharged the emigrants, had among them a large percentage of German spies with fake documents. Then I was delayed because of my brother. He is still mad, and I asked to enlist him in the reserve so that he might take off his regimental uniform. I sent him to Vladivostok with a Hussar-steward, as it was impossible to give him any money directly.

The new supreme Commander-in-Chief, General Alexeyev, was removed from his position and replaced by General Brusilov. General Gutor was appointed to replace Brusilov. I am tired and have lost weight. It’s hard to get people engaged when the other squadrons are doing nothing.

There is anarchy in Kronstadt. Yesterday I conducted a walk-maneuver with the squadron. We walked more than 20 versts to the Hussar regiment headquarters, and we returned by narrow gauge railway. The Hussars were surprised by such a “long incursion”. And today, for the first time, the squadron protested going out for a drill. I went out to the men with two hand grenades and a Parabellum in my hand but thank God I managed to persuade them to practice.

I went to the divisional headquarters for a meeting of the divisional committee. I was elected to a special combat committee. What haven’t I been chosen for? As a representative of the officers to the regimental committee, as chairman of the squadron disciplinary court, to the division committee, and now I still have to give up my squadron. But I asked the division commander to remain in the ranks, and not to be at headquarters.

Today the young Hussar Sudakov blew off 7 fingers with a hand grenade. I thought he would lose 1-2 fingers and go to the rear, but he lost seven.

Today at 7 p.m. our artillery fire hit a German airplane. It landed on the German coast where it was taken.

Non-commissioned officer Tkachev wounded himself today by shooting off his ring and little fingers. He says he accidentally grabbed his rifle by the bayonet. Hussar Vechkanov shot off his thumb, also “accidentally.” The newcomers are Syzrans. The squadron is outraged by this.
