Наконец-то попал в сие знаменитое место на Яве, но оно меня не удивляет. Бали гораздо красивее. Попал в маленький пансион – хозяйка немка, уютно, хорошо кормит и дешево. Жильцы в пансионе симпатичные люди. Очень доволен климатом. Таверне получил известие: немедленно выехать в Батавию, доктор уезжает экстренно на Борнео, так как там умер один человек, который был главой экспедиции по изысканию нефтяных источников. Начали работать друзья Мерапи и Сиаве. Я имею задачу на неделю – должна выясниться обстановка. Расстался с Таверне по-дружески.

At last I made it to that famous place in Java, but it does not impress me. Bali is far more beautiful. I arrived to a little boarding house: the landlady is a German; it’s comfortable, with good food, and cheap. The lodgers in the boarding house are nice people. I’m happy with the climate. Taverne received word to quickly leave for Batavia; Dr. Kemmerling is urgently leaving for Borneo, since a person died there who was the head of an expedition to survey oil sources. My friends Merapi and Siave began to work. I have a task for the week; my situation should become clearer. I parted with Taverne on friendly terms.
