It is raining hard. There is a lot of water in the trenches; I am wet past my knees and covered in mud. Our officers’ dugout is very decent for dry weather, but the water is leaking in so much that there are little rivers flowing inside. Boots are wet, tea cannot be warmed. The situation is sad. This page in the book will be a historical one. During the shelling, it is impossible to leave the dugout: bullets buzz like bumblebees.
