July 15th, 1915

The night passed quietly. Since July 12th, little has been heard about the enemy; the Germans lost contact with us, since we moved away so quickly. Why? The day was clear: it was the only thing that kept me and Domozhirov in a good mood. Recently there has been a lot of confusion. The Germans do not want to approach us and seem to rest and dig in along the Nevėžis River. A strange day: one moment the sun is baking us, the next moment there is a downpour. One moment you’re putting on your raincoat, the next moment you’re taking it off. In the forest there are a lot of mushrooms, raspberries, and wild strawberries. We eat what falls at arm length.
